I carried the 645D kit XC skiing for the moonrise tonight. Now I'm pretty tired!

Of if you gotta have the D, don't take the 300/4, take the 150/2.8 or even better the 200/4. The 150 is nice and light if it has the reach you need, but the 200/4 gives more reach and stops down to f 32, making it nice for landscapers. I like my 300/4, but I don't particularly enjoy carrying it around.

It's part of the kit I always take if I'm bringing the D. I just don't usually ski or bike with that kit and I'm reminded why again. I also had the 200/4 with me but really wanted to try for lots of magnification to make the moon big. I know a smaller sensor would make that easier but I wanted to give this a try. At least it was a pleasant night and the snow has firmed up a lot which make travel more efficient than when it is soft.
Now tonight my K-1 kit will feel light!

Nice photos and cool scenery!

That's the kind of scenery that begs revisiting and can ultimately lead to some awesome images.

That little "bonsai" tree on the right is screaming for a moon-nestled-in-tree image or some other composition combining the moon & tree at similar scale. With a fullish moon it would be like a lunar scoop of ice cream on a tree-cup. Or get closer to the tree and make the moon look like an egg in a nest. Shooting a pre-dawn moonrise and some days before a new moon might get an awesome crescent moon that echos the shape of the tree. (You'll probably want the K-1 for the crescent moon because you'll need a pretty high ISO to stop the moon's motion plus you might need to stop-down a bit to get both the tree and moon with the DoF.)

Thanks! I agree 100% and have revisited this many times over the years. I ski by here all winter and ride by on my mountain bike all summer. It's also a popular zone with other local photogs and we have all done the moon in the tree shot. I took a few last night too but the composition wasn't balanced enough for my eye.
I just searched my Flickr stream for "Hartman Rocks", the name of the area and I have 562 photos with that tag.

Here is a K-1 shot of the moon in the tree. Not quite perfect as the DR was hard to manage but the clouds were pretty sweet that night.

Couple of spring snow shots

Early morning snow storm on third day of spring at 35 degrees. This won't last long, but interesting to watch while it lasts.

I don't want to steal Ed's thunder, but our very own Ed Hurst is in San Francisco this week and we decided to place both our 645Z's in mortal danger with an evening climb down a precarious slope on Yerba Buena Island. The reward was this wonderful view, but everything leading up to and following, was harrowing.
