Excellent capture! Macro with a 400 is always bound to be exciting. Using a stool to see the viewfinder wins extra points. Couldn't the flip down screen & live view accomplished the same thing.

Thanks for sharing,

Thanks!

In principle the screen would work for composition and exposure, but I was in clear-day-at-noon sunlight and I would have to own a Mathew Brady approved black cloth to drape the screen and myself. (Note to self: Add black cloth to wishlist.)

I will admit to generally not paying much attention to the screen in bright daylight except to check the light intensity distribution plot after each shot. These shots are from camera jpegs and are not post-processed. My memory of the distribution plots suggests I was balanced (or the camera program was balanced) for avoiding saturation and some increase in image dynamic range would be possible with post processing.

I rarely shoot close-ups, the picture of the frog taken with the FA 400 mm f/5.6 really fascinated me. All the pictures I ever took with my 400 mm were always set at infinity ... too bad for me.

As traveling to the U.S. seems to be impossible this summer (the Canada - U.S. border is closed until further notice and our Insurance Providers won't cover us if we fall sick with COVID-19 in the U.S. anyway), I just ordered on eBay a 645 Automatic Bellows for my 645Z. I will use it with my 67 100 mm f/4 Macro and adapter this summer, hunting for plant life and, who knows, maybe an insect or two. The last time I used a bellows, it was for grasshopper hunting and I was 16 (50 years ago) ... hahaha !

I also have the 67 100mm f 4.0 macro and its 1:1 converter. Are you using the bellows instead of the 1:1 converter? I am wondering why, if you are trying for greater than 1:1 or simply do not have the converter t this time. I am looking forward to seeing your work with the converter.

I lost the converter years ago, Ivan, but the lens alone is very sharp to 1:2 magnification. Coupled with the bellows, this Macro lens should perform very well. Probably 2X magnification will be possible. I never liked the converter anyway, kind of a weird gadget. As I won't be traveling very far, I have to occupy my time ... lol ! I'll try to post pictures as soon as I receive my Bellows set.

Yes, the lens is a little fiddly with the converter and hood arrangement. I really have not tried the converter yet myself.

It was a fortuitous frog; the pond has several, but they tend to sun on the surrounding rocks. And the reason I got the camera out in the first place was to photo for my wife a completely unrelated hosta bloom (with the 90 macro), which motivated me to finish the micro apple tree series, which led to the day lilies by the pond, and thence discovery of the frog.

Hosta flowering, for the record.
