645z and 120 soft 6x7. Trying out lens first day. I'm determined to figure out this lens and get good at using it. Exposure, contrast, saturation bumped, sharpness untouched.

Love the dreamy look. I'd say you're already good at using this lens. Do you remember if this was wide open for maximum softness? Now I'm wanting one of these lenses. You should write a review.

On the trail of the night sky

Monday night was clear in Sydney, so I set out to shoot star trails. I did have in mind doing three shots in different locations, but decided to stop at two - at work in the morning and my boys' first day back at school following the holidays, so even I occasionally decide to be (vaguely) sensible.

Strawberries. Pentax 645Z + 645 Bellows + 645 A 120 mm f/4 MACRO.

I changed my color palette from "VIBRANT" to "REVERSAL FILM", it removed the brilliant blue reflecting from the sky into the water. Below is a picture of the set-up.

Same strawberries picture, VIBRANT color palette set on the 645Z

Picture taken with my usual VIBRANT color palette on the 645Z. More blue around the fruit coming from the sky reflection. Maybe overdone a little ...

STRAWBERRIES, other version, VIBRANT setting.

Second version obtained by turning the fruit bowl, same set-up, same lighting conditions, similar exposure.

Nice star trails Ed, with good foregrounds. I haven't tried that yet with the 645z. How long were the exposures? Did you use an ND filter or layer foreground/background?

Cool macro setup, Richard. Your food shots are making me hungry too.

Hi,

Giant Burger! Reminds me of, long ago, I saw an oil storage tank painted like a giant burger. No cell phone cams in those days, and no other cam with me, so no pic. Not even a grainy B&W film one.

BLACKBERRY @ 1.5X magnification. Looking almost like an alien object from space.

Taking those macro images with the 645Z was quite a schooling ... First, learning patience, as setting up takes a lot of time. Then learning the 645Z is an amazing machine you can adjust to produce dozens of different pictures of the exact same subject, just changing exposure parameters, direction of light source or color palette. And the results, although the subject is totally mundane, look like out of this world "things" (almost abstract) ... !

P.S. If ever you get "fed up" of these pictures, let me know, I will stop posting them ... (no pun intended).

Hi,

I like them.

I am tempted to dig into a box of old BlackBerry phones I was involved in R+D on and shoot and post them.

Thanks a lot! I'm in the mood to shoot a dreamy series now.
I can post sample photos from wide open 3.5 to 5.6. I also got the 85mm k mount FA soft b/c of lens buying addiction. I want to say the 120mm is my favorite, but the 85mm is really nice also. I'll let you know when I post. My note taking stinks and I don't remember which was f3.5 to f5.6. Also you can see which of the lenses you want.

I love these!

Hi,

Looks like a 41, 2 or 6. I had a 46 as a farm truck growing up. Learned to drive something not a tractor in it. They had just changed to that style and the war came. So, precious few 42s. No 43, 4 or 5 as they morphed into Sherman Tanks. Then, lots of 46 ones. And, some way into 47 but they changed the style in 47. So, not many 47s either.

I learned all this as the 46 GMC was also my teacher in finding parts in junkyards.
