Amazing light, Boris! Wonderfully captured...

P.S. Speaking as a Brit, how refreshing to discover that there are other Borises in the world, not just 'that' Boris that the UK keeps talking about ;-)

@sculptormic Sir, could you give us a few hints as how you operate when you realise your photographic art (choice of lenses, exposure times, apertures, use of support, moment of the day, etc). We all appreciate sharing our "trade secrets" between ourselves on this Forum.

Hi,

Wow. Really nice. Reminds me of one I took long ago with a D1 (or was it a D1H?). But, not MF, sadly. Took it in a wildlife refuge on Sanibel Island in Florida. The main difference was the tree in the center was dead. The rest was eerily similar.

Excellent shot!

Hi Richard, it is all quiet simple. I do photograph any time of the day but preferbly early in the morning or late in the afternoon as many of us do. Most of my pictures are taken with the HD Pentax-DA 645 28-45mm F4.5 ED AW SR and always on F11 because I find that the best number for the combination of overall sharpness and DOF for this lens. For me an ideal walk around lens also because it is wide enough for me compared with for examle the 32-64 from Fuji. A reason for me to stay with Pentax. They have the same sensor anyway. It is a bit heavy though, I often carry the camera lens combination like a baby in my left arm to protect my neck because I need to walk a lot to find my locations. This lens has shake reduction so even 1/15 it will still be oké out of hand. My second most used lens is the Pentax 67 50-110. Wonderfull sharp lens with very special colors, I think. This lens I shoot at F 16 or even F 22 mostly on a monopod. I don't really like to walk around with a tripod. Third lens I use a lot is the Mamiya shift 50/3.5 in Hasselblad mount, also at F16. A bit soft, but it renders wonderfully, just needs some extra contrast ( and sharpening) compared to the other lenses. Most other lenses always on F11. At night on a tripod of course. Always try to keep the verticals straight and paralell with the sides of the picture. Mostly I try to avoid "en face' compositions because of the lack of dynamics in the perspective.
Quiet simple and a bit boring all together.

I did a small review on the P67 55-110 lens here on this forum. Not very technical, that has not my strongest interest, but mostly some samples.

One of the things that is true of nearly all excellent art in all media is that in its final manifestation it seems somehow inevitable for it to be that way. Sometimes, more rarely, it's not just seemingly inevitable but also surprising. Consider the formal, internal logic of Mozart or Bach. From a music theory standpoint their internal workings seem completely orderly and self evident. But when each composer began the work, the page was blank. Here is the miracle and ultimate mystery of art, I believe, and why it is important over time.

This is one of the things that distinguishes this work. The artist's ability to "find" these formal harmonies within contexts most would ignore as too quotidian or even ugly, and thus elucidate their internal beauty, is the hallmark of an extremely keen eye-mind combination. And that takes dedication and years and years of internalizing how formal relationships function. It's work. Lots of us can take nice scenics that are quite attractive, even "spectacular". But what sculptormic does, and Boris Kolo in an excellent example above, is something different.

You can tell I'm a fan.

Thank you for sharing this. I have been thinking of getting the Pentax 67 55-110 as well; wondering if it gives you any trouble in the 101-110mm range. :>)

It's a 55-100 and yes, it does well at the long end. It's about as sharp as the primes in its focal range. A real landscape workhorse.

Pentax 645Z with Pentax 645 DFA 55. Quickly pulled the car onto a gravel parking lot and shoot handheld out the open window. Wish a more exciting foreground had been available.

Thanks for looking,
