The Warringah Freeway carves its way through the northern Sydney suburbs, connecting to the Harbour Bridge (which is visible in the distance, along with the Opera House). Hard to believe that such a bright, urban scene can also reveal the stars - but it can!

Fantastic image. The star trails balance the road lanes and the city skyline pulls it all together. Superb composition.

Thanks for sharing,

Ed,

Wow ! Australia drives on the left side of the road. I always wanted to know : on a manual transmission, you have to shift speeds with your left arm but how are the pedals arranged ? Clutch on the left, brake in the middle and accelerator on the right side like our cars in North America ?

Regards

Same pedal arrangement. Driving is one of the hardest parts for me to visit my Aussie family. Especially when terribly jetlagged!

Such a stunning shot. Makes me wonder how much effort you did in pulling this off. Its surely not an image that one sees every now and then.

Superb

I think these are the types of photos where you feel there is something different... then you look into it, and understand - medium format...

Thanks everyone for your kind words - so glad you like it! I've had my eye on this picture for a long time and finally got around to doing it.

Max - the effort level is similar to my usual urban star trail images... The sky, as usual, is made up of thousands of images - stacking around 3000 high ISO files (in this case) of short-ish exposures for about 90 mins to get this effect. They needed a little tidying up due to aircraft activity over the city. These files were too bright for the traffic trails, so I shot that area separately using about 50 exposures (at ISO 100), then stacked those. Finally, I shot a series of ISO 100 shots at f11 to get the wider scene at high quality (bracketing at various exposures to allow editing a range of parts of the scene, from dark to very bright). Sounds like a lot, but i am used to it with the star trail shots - this wasn't really any worse! The only other complication was finding the right exact vantage point, where signs, street lights, trees, etc. weren't overlapping and standing where I could see as much of the Harbour Bridge as the modern buildings allow. I had to use a stepladder to get over a high fence to get the angle I wanted.

As for driving on the left side of the road, I'm used to switching from side to side. I grew up in the UK (also left hand side!) but also have spent a lot of time driving in the US, continental Europe and parts of Asia. So I'm quite accustomed to adjusting and it doesn't bother me any more. I probably have to concentrate more consciously for about the first 30 mins after making a change, then it falls into place.

Difficulty finding critical focus with the 67 M 500 mm f/5.6 + 645Z

FIRST IMAGE : Critical focus correctly set on the children using f/11.

SECOND IMAGE : Critical focus off, set on the bushes a little past the children using f/8.

Manually focusing this long and slow 67 M 500 mm f/5.6 lens on distant subjects with the 645Z is somewhat difficult. Closing the aperture a little helps.

Hi,

I spent a lot of time racing. Many of those Lotus. About half of them RHD. No issues from switching sides. Road courses run clockwise. Ovals counterclockwise. Still no problems switching.

Getting on the highway after racing....now I can't use the entire road and part of the sides!

Richard - don't know if the issue is just me, but I can't see any images on this post at all...
