A favorite prime lens

A walk in the snow with 645Z and Pentax 67 75mm f 2.8. This lens is over priced nowadays, but I managed to find an affordable copy with dented filter thread, not yet repaired.

Hello Ivan,

I guess these P67 lenses are still expensive because they are quite rare. I think this was one of the last lenses ever produced for the Pentax 67 system, along with the 2 zooms. It is an advanced design, using aspherical elements, it is extremely sharp starting at f/5.6 and it was not produced in large quantities. I bought mine new at B&H for 1000 $ at the time and it passes for a "bargain" now (nice used copies fetch prices upwards of 2000 $ on eBay). "Supply and demand" governs their price on the market.

Regards

Thanks so much, everyone! It was an amazing sight to see. As I was on the beach with the kids on a family holiday, it was a matter of calling to my partner, running back to our cabin to get the camera and hoping I didn't miss it. Sheer opportunism...!

Hi,

Both are great, Ed. And, so very different. And, the same spot. Wicked!

And, y'all really have to stop showing me wonderful shots taken with lenses I don't have yet. My wife is very, very scared by that word: yet!

That is really nice. Thanks. If that Oria guy stopped skywriting it would be perfect.

Was playing with the P645 600mm lens today and revisited the combo with the 1.4 teleconverter. I haven't used this lens for a while and when I opened the box I realized that I had since bought a clear filter for it. I recall reading somewhere that the lens is designed to have at least a clear filter in place. No idea if this has any real impact on the lens' ability to resolve better detail or not, but for good luck and prosperity the filter went in.

I found that the 1.4TC performed fairly well with the 600mm lens but not when the target is too far away. No idea why this is a factor. See the pictures below:

About a 140% crop of a mountain top with some rocks and foliage to see the ability of the lens and camera to resolve the details. The target is about 3km away. Some atmospheric disturbance, but I selected the best of a series of shots to avoid the worst effects.

The same mountain but with the 1.4TC and +/- 140% crop. Comparing the two pictures it looks as if the edges are reasonable but it starts to fail with resolving the foliage.

However at a nearby distance of about 25m the 1.4TC works fairly well with the 600mm lens. I think it does a fairly good job on the feathers, which are normally very difficult.

About 90% crop of the bird (I think it is a Bull Bull)

Comments and pixel peeping appreciated....
