A stitch from Sunday morning's outing which was really nice. I had a old friend and work colleague in town with his daughter who is into landscape photography.
I invited her to join me and I think the scenery and conditions just about blew her mind. Fun to share with someone who appreciates it so much. She got some fine photos too.
I wasn't expecting the fresh snow but it was a welcome surprise!

Yellow Aspen in sidelight, Ste Anne River, QUEBEC. Taken with DFA 55 mm f/2.8 AL.

First try of my new DFA 55 mm f/2.8 AL standard lens. Last week, I found my old A 55 mm f/2.8 lacking in detail gathering ability. This new digital lens should correct the situation. Taken on tripod, 1/125 sec @ f/8.

DFA 55 mm f/2.8 AL at every aperture. Ste Anne River, 645Z on tripod.

I mounted this new DFA 55 mm f/2.8 AL lens on my 645Z and shot at every aperture between f/2.8 and f/22 on tripod. Sharpness almost constant between f/5.6 and f/22.

OPTIMUM : f/16

I need to reshoot this, not real happy with the outcome. It's part of a local art exhibit. Can't quite put my finger on what it is. Angle maybe?

Another very nice image!
The way the super fit mountain sport fanatics become that way is they keep on doing it!
Or at least it can get you into reasonably fit mountain sport fanatic range like me.
You are right and I keep chugging away at it, but keep my exertion level to a point where I can still enjoy the experience. The reward once you get to the top is always worth it, albeit difficult to capture in an image. The odd thing is that the spectacular view is often the mountain you are standing on.

I used to do a lot of deep diving and the reward feeling is similar to reaching a mountain top. Once I reached the bottom I always looked up and in relatively clear water you can sometimes see a landscape of the sea floor and sloping drop-offs towards the surface.

Most of the times there were murky layers that obscured the view to the surface and on those dives the view was limited to a "magnificent" vista of mud sediment and occasional deep corals, hosting the odd inquisitive fish wondering what the heck you are doing there.

When I got my 645z in 2015, I enquired about an underwater housing for it and approached a local HK manufacturer of housings. They said they could make it and had in fact made one for a Phase One for some guy. The price tag was to be based on actual costs with a target of between USD 30k to $40k. I changed the subject and decided to stay with my outdated video camera and GoPro.

Not to bore everybody, but here are a couple of frame-grabs from "down-under" in Tanzania.

#1 - Black coral and a vase coral at 450ft.

#2 - A lone black coral at +/- 400ft looking up at the ridge above at 260ft.

#3 - From the ledge at 260ft looking back to where I came from.

#4 - A huge hammerhead shark, I guess at least 14ft, cruising by, but steering well clear of me, picture also looking from the ledge at 260ft.

Hope I am forgiven for being a little off topic.

Not my usual style of image, but I had to get out today to record the final trip of one of Sydney's famous Manly ferries. Plying their way the seven nautical miles from Circular Quay (in the centre of Sydney) to Manly wharf (on the city's Northern Beaches), the ferry is one of the historic sights people come to see and enjoy. The current vessels date back to the 80s, but they are about to be retired and replaced by smaller, soulless, modern heaps of junk! It's been very controversial, with enormous campaigns to save them; so far, two out of the four vessels are to be kept to operate weekend and special services, but they won't just be the whole, normal fleet as they were. And two of them are being retired. The Minister responsible for the decision has stood down from state politics, so I guess the decision will just stand without anyone to carry the can. Oh well!

Today was the last trip of one of the vessels, Queenscliff. An emotional occasion that attracted big crowds to watch. Here are my two sons, Archie(7) and Henry (5), watching as she departs from Manly for the very last time.

Hi,

I do love these river shots. Reminds me of the Sacandaga I grew up on in the Adirondacks of New York. Much prettier than the Cape Fear I live on here in North Carolina now. Looks like mud all the time....

I'm happy my images bring back warm memories of your youth, Stan.

Receive my very Best Regards

P.S. Some people don't believe such clean and "blue" rivers can exist for real. I get strange comments on my "forcing colors" in an unnatural way. But, for real, they do exist !!

Thanks Ed! It's a shame about those ferries! I've "fed the fish" () from one after a long night partying in Manly and then catching the last one back.
Not my proudest moment but a fun (yet foggy) memory regardless!

Well, 200 mm lens, ISO 200, 1/200 sec ... Something strange on Isle d'Orleans today.

My little FA 200 mm f/4 shines in autumn splendor.

Yesterday, there were some nice Sydney storms. Hail, tornado warnings, heavy lightning activity, etc.. I headed out once work permitted (which meant I did miss out on a lot of the best stuff) but snagged this. Well, not quite this. The lightning strike wasn't quite where I wanted it to be, so some editing was involved.
