Hi,

The first thing I thought of when I saw that spire is that the wood warped as it dried out. I'm used to seeing that with barns where we saw our own trees to make the lumber. Some need longer drying that others so get used a tad too early and - warp factor 7!

My first thought is that the company which is currently using crooked carrots to advertise their medication aimed at curing Peyronie's Disease might consider using this steeple as an alternative.

From Wikipedia about the origin of that crooked spire...

"The reason is uncertain and still debated: suggestions include lack of skilled workers because of the Black Death, which occurred as much of the church was being built; the use of insufficient cross bracing and 'green timber' – unseasoned timber; and also the 17th-century addition of 33 tons of lead sheeting covering the spire, resting on 14th-century bracing not designed to carry such weight. Another theory is sunlight heating the south side of the tower and causing the lead there to expand at a greater rate than the north side, resulting in an unequal expansion. Possibly the spire's twist is due to a combination of factors."
I like the joke version on Wikipedia: "... while the more mocking version has the church being so surprised to see a virgin being married, whether groom or bride, that its spire turned to look at the betrothed, becoming stuck – but that should another virgin ever marry in the church, the spire will return to true again." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Church_of_St_Mary_and_All_Saints,_Chesterfield...20true%20again

God forbid anybody should be offended, yet if so, please take up the serious offense with Wikipedia.

Vivid is a massive cultural festival of events and lights held in Sydney. It's grown in scale and popularity since its early days, though Covid led to two years without it. Now it's back with a vengeance!

Last week, I managed to secure access to the southeast pylon of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, a place that's usually out of bounds after sunset. It yielded a few interesting images...

GFX100S with Pentax 645 25mm DA lens

Pentax 645 28-45mm lens @ circa 30mm

[/IMG]

Pentax 67 55-100mm lens @ circa 95mm

And finally a shot taken after my pylon sojourn, from under the bridge. Pentax 645 25mm DA lens...

Breathtaking images. Love the night shots. Answers the question, for me, if Pentax lenses are up to the 100mp challenge.
Thanks for sharing the extraordinary images,

You guys are all very kind - thanks so much!

And yes, I do find the Pentax lenses up to the job. Could they be even better? Certainly! But they do deliver more detail than the older 50MP sensors could deliver.

And thanks for all the comments about the crooked spire. I love it when images spark banter. And some of your comments genuinely made me laugh out loud!

Hiking in the woods in Berlin area

645z + P67 164mm f/2.8

Still need to figure out composition in the woodlands. Hiking here is a walk in the park. Steepest incline is abt 100m over 20km.

Hi,

Nope. They are supposed to lengthen with heat and shrink with cold, like most every solid save water (which just has to be weird and laugh about it when it splits your hoses you didn't get drained and put away in time). So, 164mm in the Winter, 165mm in the Spring and Fall and 166mm in the Summer. ;p

Hi,

Ha! Another good one!

Maybe the steeple was made by the Crooked Man?

And there I thought the culprit was focus breathing.... Thanks Stan, now I know the cold is to blame for the length discrepancies.

Who'd have thought that a church steeple and a telephoto lens could lead to such a discussion. We are still talking about lens length here, aren't we?
