ok, this is a little more interesting just down the road. There actually is a decent waterfall, but at the time there were alot of half drunk kids playing (one almost fell over the falls), so no pics of that .

Dee Why Lagoon, in Sydney's Northern Beaches, is surrounded by surburbia these days, but still retains a wild quality. Hard to believe that it was felt to be so much at risk during World War II of becoming a landing place for the Japanese that tank traps were installed in the area...

Taken with the kind assistance of some friends, whose house has this view (not visible from public places).

But for the battle of the Coral Sea, everything north of RT1 in northern Queensland was seriously at risk. A risk that didn't abate until the New Guinea campaign was well underway, I think.

At that point in '42, there was little stopping the Japanese.

645z + FA45-85mm

I forgot to mention that I also used a Tiffen Pro-Black Mist 1/4 filter. You can see the effect in a couple of pictures where the bright sun light shone through the upper canopy, most visible in picture #4. Not sure if I like the effect on Landscape pictures. Perhaps better on street shots or portraits.

These are fantastic pictures Ed. These beasts that carried the heavy loads of 20th century industrialization across the world will soon disappear totally. Noisy and dirty as you can get, but super impressive power with only using water and fire. Amazing leap we made after having had these two elements (water & fire) with us for millennia, but only "recently" found a way to utilize its inherent power.

I must say I really appreciate your pictures and especially your selection of subjects as well. Thank you for sharing with us.

Just remembered now when I was in high school at boarding school my bedroom window was about 100m from the one-horse town's single rail line coming into town. Because of the surrounding hill country they only used Garratts there and every now and then the driver pulling out of town would do a wheelie to "clear" the wheels so to speak. Woke up the whole town. Massive machine and demanding respect.

Were those Garratts you knew from days of yore in South Africa?

Hi Ed, yes and it was around 1972. They phased them out and replaced with diesel electrics and by 1974 I can't recall seeing the Garratts anymore.

They did continue in use in other parts of SA for much longer, though steam was finished in everyday service by 1990. It last for longer than it otherwise might have due to sanctions placed on apartheid South Africa, making it difficult to import oil. With the local supplies of coal, steam remained a viable alternative.

I did three trips to South Africa in 2003, 2004 and 2007. Two of those trips were specifically to photograph steam trains on an organised basis - including Garratts. They were laid on for us, using infrastructure that remained from the steam days (and which has mostly vanished since). I'll post some of these pics when I get a chance! Who knows - I may even have some near where you were...

Moonee Ponds Creek Viaduct is situated in the suburbs of Melbourne, sitting amongst suburban streets and, these days, overshadowed by the distant Central Business District and the airport. But it still sees regular traffic, including heavy freight trains. It seems like a vestige of an older world somehow...

More Melbourne railway goodness. This time, the rush hour traffic working in and out of Flinders Street station. The buildings of South Bank are to the left and the main CBD is to the right. The whole area around the left side of the foreground would once have been railway sidings. Somewhere, out of shot to the left, are Melbourne Park (where the Australian Open tennis is held) and the Melbourne Cricket Ground or 'MCG' (simply a heavenly place for all Aussie cricket fans, especially Victorians - who simply know it as 'the G').

I added some details on these pictures about the pro-black mist filter.

On 12th and 13th June, I ventured west from Sydney, over the Blue Mountains and onto the plains beyond. A steam loco. was doing a series of trips, based around Bathurst (venturing as far as Orange). I decided this needed to be experienced, especially as the loco. in question was no. 6029 - a 4-8-4+4-8-4 AD60 Garratt dating back to 1954.

This, by the way, is a small crop taken moments before, with the same lens (I knew 102MP would come in useful some time)

Love these old steam engines. I will never forget a three-day trip I took back in the early 1980s from Beijing all the way south to Guanghou (Canton) in a long (maybe about 35 passenger cars) steam locomotive train. The train was so long that from my car toward the back, I could easily view the entire train as it rounded the railway curves. Toilet facilities included an Asian style toilet so that when using it, the squatter could view the rails as the train sped its way south. Somewhere lost in my files are photos of a younger version of myself, several train crewmen and passengers, and the train itself with an early Pentax (post M42) camera and an old Sears version of the Pentax-M 50m f 1.8. I used that camera all over the world in manual mode withn nothing but my gut feel for lighting intensity and the Sunny 16 rule.
