Buying used 645 gear

What's a good source for buying used 645 lenses in the US (I'm in NYC)? Specifically the FAs are just so hard to find!

I can't even find the 45-85mm or the 80-150mm in great condition, let alone my dream: the 120mm f/4 FA.

I scrape eBay, photo.net, fredmiranda, KEH.com, pentaxforums (!) and Adorama every day.

Any others you can suggest?

You might try craigslist locally

It's the Curse of Pentax - not enough stuff comes up for sale

I have bought Pentax FA lenses through photo.net, KEH.com and ebay. I have purchased an A 645 lens via local craigslist (the A 35mm actually). With KEH you can call and ask them to alert you when a specific lens comes in, although I have been on this list, I always found the lens in their inventory before I ever got a call/email from them, so not sure if this actually works.

Unfortunately, you have to troll through ebay a lot, since many items show up asm "buy it now" and could be gone quickly, before you know it has been listed.

645 lenses

I find it odd that there are so few lens on the market. Right now KEH only lists the 45-85 and 80-160 zooms (amongst zooms) and and bunch or ordinary primes. Someone must be hoarding them in anticipation of the 645D or something.

Agreed, Warren - I remember seeing a ton of them on KEH not awhile ago. Should've snapped them up when I had the chance! A shame, but I was busy paying off my 35mm FA

You might want to try contacting the folks at Japan Eposures. They can look over there in Japan for you, make a purchase and send it to you. I did that for my 67 300mm ED IF lens. The used price was satisfactory by time I paid the finders fee, duty and what not. But at least I didn't have to wait for the likelyhood of one popping up and competing for it on Ebay.

Hoarding

I don't get the hoarding mentality at all. If and when Pentax does finally come out with the 645D there'll surely be an abundance of lenses available for it, and it's relatively simple for easy for existing lens designs to be placed back into the production pipeline. (They'll have warrantees, too!). Speculators may not fare so well.

But strange things may be afoot. After wallowing around in the $250-350 range I see that 645N bodies are fetching more nowadays. Shutterbug has an average condition used 645N right now with 3+ days left on the auction that's sitting at $610. That's almost twice what I paid for a mint one, less than two years ago (and the auction isn't even done yet).

I think the hoarding mentality comes from the fact that even I, a 645 shooter for 3 years running, have to troll every site out there just to find the equipment I need. Let alone a shooter since the 80s.

I'm probably making it worse with forum postings like these!!

Good news, though - just found the 120mm FA on KEH for an insanely low price.

Already ordered it

There is hope!

There is a good trade and stock of used Pentax 645 A and FA in Japan, also Taiwan and Hong Kong.

If you are looking for a big buy a trip to the Far east is worth it. If not TUCO's suggestion is a viable one for a one off purchase.

Rodney - case in point!

Thanks for the tip.

I've started just checking KEH everyday and it seems to be the best source, even still.

Don't forget to look at the In-Transit Inventory link on the main page. That may save you some daily checks.
