How-to: Check Pentax camera shutter count and manufacture date online
Posted By: Adam, 12-22-2011, 04:56 AM

Your camera's shutter count and manufacture date are stored in the EXIF data of every photo you take. I've now added an online tool that reads this data and can tell you when your camera was built and how many photos it has taken:

Check Shutter Count & Camera Manufacture Date Online - EXIF Reader

Enjoy!

40,000 shots from my K-x, and it's still running perfectly (touch wood) with an average of 66 photos a day.

Files names don't reflect your shutter count, as if you delete the most recent file it will just start numbering lower, and vice-versa.

Shutter count

Adam,
I have just bought a K-5 and an odd thing happened with the shutter count. After I set up the parameters similarly to my K-7 I did some test shots and I noticed the shutter count was at 7862. Getting a little hot under the collar I ran your utility before I called the dealer thinking I was sold a used or demo camera. Anyway the shutter count came up as 6, a huge difference from what it was recording. Even after formatting the card, which I took out of my K-7, the shutter count remains high. Do you have any idea why this would happen?

Thanks for this! I have been considering selling my K-x and I was curious what the current shutter count is.

Good evening,

I have a K-5. I' ve taken out the card and inserted it into a Fujifilm. It was at its 6k- is shot (the fuji) , and when i' ve inserted it back into my pentax, the pentax went from there with the count (i must mention there were only about 2.3 k shots on the pentax) .

How can I resolve this? Is there a real method of counting the shots?

Thank you!

Hey Adam I having frustrating issue, I can't seem to get the EXIF data to show my shutter count, can you or anyone help me with this??
I don't think I changed any settings on the camera, just one day I went to look at EXIF data and it never shows even to this day.

Make sure that you upload an un-edited image. Some photoeditors will remove some of the EXIF information.

Well, I have one question: when I see all EXIF data, there is string for Shutter count. For example, Shutter count="235 45 213 229". For the same frame your program shows "8,219". How can I recalculate first ("raw") value to second without any special program?

Out of whack for the K-30.
I just purchased a used K-30. Using the jpeg I just shot.... The seller says the camera was manufactured in June of 2012, the utility says July 2012. The seller says 8,329 shutter clicks, the utility says 6. While the camera has no obvious sign of use, I tend to trust the previous owner's numbers, at least so far as shutter count, a bit more.

Very handy utility, thanks.
My newly-acquired but battered K20D shows 10K-ish which surprised me that it's so relatively low, while my good condition but older K10D shows 12K-ish, which is about right. I recall using some other utility when I bought that used and it showed about 6K at the time.
