How-to: Check Pentax camera shutter count and manufacture date online
Posted By: Adam, 12-22-2011, 04:56 AM

Your camera's shutter count and manufacture date are stored in the EXIF data of every photo you take. I've now added an online tool that reads this data and can tell you when your camera was built and how many photos it has taken:

Check Shutter Count & Camera Manufacture Date Online - EXIF Reader

Enjoy!

Good EXIF utility. The down side, however, is the image has to be JPG. Can't do RAW.

At the moment the script doesn't log stats or anything, but I suppose it could do so as long as things are kept anonymous!

Thanks for adding this tool Adam. It's much much easier to read than PhotoMe.

"Unknown" shutter count for original 2003 *ist D

This works for my K-7, but for both of my *ist D cameras (original 2003 D, not DS or DL), I get "Unknown" shutter count. Does the D not store that data?

Both D files were Jpgs taken just now for this purpose, straight from the camera with no processing.

Thanks,

Greg

Take a look at the extended exif output- it should be there, could it be under a different key than the other cameras?

This is a very good utility. I am some 500 images short of 10000. And it feels like a milestone is approaching!

"Unknown" shutter count for original 2003 *ist D

Hi Adam,

I looked at them all, and I don't see it. I took another shot just now; here are the results. This is an in-camera jpg, not modified, in fact not even copied to the hard drive; from the tool I browsed to the file on the CompactFlash card exactly as written by the camera:

Again, this works fine with my K-7, but I get this "Unknown" Shutter Count with both of my *ist D bodies (original D; not DS, not DL).

(Sorry about the bad formatting; this forum software seems to be stubborn about it)

Results
If either value is showing up as "Unknown", try uploading a different file, and make sure that it hasn't been modified.

Doesn't work for me.
I'm not suprised. Nor is anyone else that knows my luck with computers.

Yup, doesn't look like it's there for the *istD, but maybe the proprietary Pentax software can read it?

K-x should work fine though, just make sure your photos are originals.
