Pentax may have a choice - invest in “FF” or invest in Medium Format. Most of the uses that Medium Format was dominant in when I was a child are now “FF” property, so I know what decision I would make.

The translation is as always a bit rough but I actually came away with pretty much the opposite understanding. That you can't listen to users and provide everything the ask for. Quite strange though that the CEO is repeating basically verbatim the arguments made by myself and others about the importance of product focus and experience. Even the examples vinyl records, anti zoom GR for instance have been put forward in several forums. Perhaps we are being monitored more than we thought This interview gives more insight into the Ricoh imaging thinking than any previous info they've released. I ran in through deepl.com which usually does better translations than google. See here https://pastebin.com/raw/UvVn40EM use reader view for better experience. I appreciated the interview, despite the typical challenges of automated translation. We get a glimpse into the collaboration between the 'Pentax' and 'Ricoh' sides of the house, and the outlook and vision expressed by Takahashi-san, and his comments on "brand value." I like this guy. Other sites have picked up on this interview. PetaPixel appears to have mis-interpreted a part of the translation: "In the interview, Takahashi seems to lean heavily into the idea that Ricoh Imaging, which includes Pentax, will continue to develop products that aim for a certain experience while the only end result the company cares about is tack-sharp images." I think the translation "sharp" means keeping the product focused on key goals and objectives. MIRRORLESS RUMORS says "So really not a lot of info but it’s clear they don’t give a damn about making mirrorless system cameras." They didn't seem to pick up on any of the nuances of the interview. I liked what he said. Sounds a bit like he is playing the Infinite Game and the golden circle that Simon Sinek describes.

I think it is wonderful we have to learn about their strategy in a car maker's campaign. And that in a car campaign of a brand I didn't even know existed anymore. Anyway. There is a site for the joint campaign with some photos (you know, the end product this is supposed to be about): ?Feel the Moment?RICOH GR ? ??????????????????? | Alfa Romeo????? ???? Plenty of things to discuss related to this article. There is no discussion thread in this forum?

Site Supporter | Phone cameras today seem to be going in a similar direction. My iPhone 11 Pro produces flat, cartoony, over-processed images that repulse me. It didn't have to be that way. Apple programmed it to do that, because they decided that's what the masses want. I don't see any problem like that with mirrorless system cameras today. They are fantastic, and I don't know how DSLRs hold out against them. If Ricoh-Pentax really want to go retro, I would nudge them towards producing a new 35mm film SLR. That would make a splash and provide something we can't get elsewhere anymore. I'd love something like a ZX-5n with improved build and updated electronics. They could sell a lot of FA Limiteds with it too. |

One thing that irked me was his comparison with CD and LP. CDs are certainly capable of sounding much better than LP records. It's what they were invented for, and the engineers at Phillips really knew what they were doing. The problem with CDs is that since about the late 1990s most of them (outside of maybe jazz and classical) have been horribly mastered. The levels are cranked up, compressed and clipped to make them sound like garbage. Why? Well, that's the fashion. That's what the music industry collectively decided to do, decided would sell. If I want a good recording of new music, now I generally have to buy it on LP. Ricoh/Pentax probably likes the comparison because they want people to have that kind of nostalgic feeling about their cameras to remove themselves from the technological one-upmanships of the mirrorless cameras. I'd love something like a ZX-5n with improved build and updated electronics. They could sell a lot of FA Limiteds with it too. They specifically say that vinyl is not a retro thing but a different, for many valuable, experience. I assume they regard SLR in the same way. They also state that convenience is not to be prioritised. Mirrorless is a convenience thing. Few would argue its more enjoyable except from the viewpoint of potentially more keepers per unit effort. They even took the two examples of a zoom GR and a mirrorless Pentax as similarly bad ideas. Absolutely correct! I cannot understand how anyone can think a zoom GR would be a good idea. Equally a mirrorless Pentax or a body fattening floppy screen on a 12fps body. Yet these things are asked for again and again. I wonder if its the same people? The convenience brigade that would sacrifice "sharpness" for convenience. Pentax is really doing exactly what I wanted them to do. I dont want them to become over priced and start Leica style over fetishishing though. Last edited by house; 12-29-2020 at 06:32 AM.

When I read or hear someone talk about how LPs sound better than digital music I assume it's not done on the basis of facts but instead emotion and different contexts. People who buy LPs like the feeling of putting the needle on the record, and hearing the pops and crackles, and listening to things on a high-end stereo system. While most digital music is listened to everywhere from while they're running to in cars to on smart speakers in their office. They conflate the two experiences and begin to believe that the LP actually sounds better. Buying CD's these days is detective work involving web pages and forums to find versions that are not compressed to death. Usually ending up with second hand copies made before the mid 90's. Even high-res SACD's, particularly those from Japan, are also often compressed, which not only sounds bad, but it is totally pointless as it throw away the extra resolution.... BTW I don't think optical finders will ever go out of fashion. Maybe the day we replace all windows with LCD screens..... Last edited by Pål Jensen; 12-29-2020 at 06:58 AM.
