I cannot understand how anyone can think a zoom GR would be a good idea. Equally a mirrorless Pentax or a body fattening floppy screen on a 12fps body.

Yet these things are asked for again and again. I wonder if its the same people? The convenience brigade that would sacrifice "sharpness" for convenience.
In fact, the sharpest way to make the camera is to lock out any drive mode that is not 12 fps. JPG is also no longer available.

Although Shinobu Takahashi in in a position of power now, and not too old, either, I do worry that a lot of what is happening in Ricoh Imaging comes across as his personal vision - well, worry is the wrong word - life's too short to worry about things you can't change - but let's say I hope he can establish a culture strong enough - and successful enough - to survive his departure.

Agree that mirrorless cameras are generally excellent. But their electronic viewfinder presents a digital representation of the real world -- the scene -- that some users might find flat and over-processed. Furthermore, some users have physiological problems with electronic viewfinders.

I do think they have the right idea - they focus on the experience of using the cameras they make. I think that's where the vinyl comparison is more accurate. They know that the vast majority of us aren't paid professionals and want to enjoy using the cameras. That's both Pentax and GR ethos, I feel... hopefully here to stay. Bringing out another Limited lens in the days of ultracorrected mirrorless lenses is a bold move, so I hope it turns out well.

I don't see how it could be any different than Pentax' own vision - this isn't a rogue CEO trying to change things to his liking. This is continuing (and re-strengthening) Pentax' heritage.

Interesting point. I thought along a similar line when I was reading the interview.

At one point in my career, I managed a research and development program that involved several labs, which were separated by geography, heritage and history, areas of specialization, and business lines. Over several years, our program evolved towards multi-disciplinary collaboration across the labs. Small steps at first, followed by more complex projects and arrangements that encouraged and facilitated cross-fertilization. I have a sense that the Pentax and Ricoh folks are heading towards integrated teams.

I do think that with the K-3 III it appears Pentax is making tougher more consistent decisions than before. I've been hoping that some of the single minded "sharpness" of the GR might bleed into Pentax and judging by the K-3 III and these interviews it seems my wish is coming true.

How this affects lenses will be interesting to see. We know what the DFA* series is about but how they will position the Limiteds and DFA lenses is less obvious. As I've said before the limited build is no longer unique but rather mainstream. In fact the DFA21ltd looks more like normal Nikon S Canon R lens than the more articulated new sigmas or rather odd looking chinese metal lenses.

It's also less clear how creative you can be with lens design. If they intend to charge loads of money for the ltds they really have to explain very well why the lens is worth the price if it doesn't meet the standard performance targets as far as resolution, distortion and chromatic aberrations go. As I said the build is no longer a unique selling point.

Yes and no - Pentax have always built their cameras well, but their image in their heyday way one of fun, cool, swinging cameras, and it was Nikon and then Canon seeing and seizing an emerging and more serious 35mm photo-journalist market that spelled their decline - IMHO, Pentax, from the mid-eighties onward, put too much research into USPs and not enough into getting the basics competitive. There is a tradition, and I've referred to it myself, of making photography an enjoyable experience, and if that's what you're talking about, I totally agree - but achieving that through finessing every aspect? I don't see that as a Pentax tradition.

I hope so

Mirrorless is a convenience thing. Few would argue its more enjoyable except from the viewpoint of potentially more keepers per unit effort.
When I hear MILC advocates talk, "convenience" is not on their list of talking points. Only DSLR advocates talk about size, for example.
MILC advocates talk about such things as being able to zoom in to check sharpness, or being able to check the histogram, or using "Focus Peaking" for better manual focusing.

All the things you list are conveniences. (zoom in to check sharpness, histogram, focus peaking)

Right. And I'm hearing mirrorless advocates talking about size and weight all the time (although that's mostly to attack the "large and heavy" DSLRs).

Agree that mirrorless cameras are generally excellent. But their electronic viewfinder presents a digital representation of the real world -- the scene -- that some users might find flat and over-processed. Furthermore, some users have physiological problems with electronic viewfinders.

- Craig
I look at the actual scene itself, and use the viewfinder only for framing, so I have no problems at all with EVRs.

These are not conveniences!
The things you list are aspects of getting good and sharp photos.

With vinyl once you have the turntable and stereo you just pick up the record and play it. With film it's that whole process of waiting days or weeks for the photos to come back and half of them are probably discards.
And yet, somehow film sales keep ratcheting upward, year after year.

Few are going to pay $hundreds or $thousands for a new SLR camera. Especially when you can Google K1000 and find pages and pages of them for sale for a little over $100.
A crummy old K1000 is not even anywhere near the ballpark of what I suggested. I mean… I guess if your philosophy is that "a film camera is a film camera", and they're all functionally the same, and any old camera will do, then sure… But would you shop for a new digital camera that way?

No, these things are making more convenient to get technically correct photos.
I have to agree with house.
