The more recent Pentax cameras do not accept the classic threaded cable releases.

They instead accept an infrared remote (Remote Control F) and/or a dedicated cable release as listed below:

Hi. I just started using my new K10D yesterday and have obviously been labouring under the mistaken impression that this camera could only be remotely fired/triggered via its front/rear infrared sensors ? I 'm not entirely sure what the 2.5mm jack socket is intended for, as the instruction manual states that it is a 'cable switch terminal'..........precisely what does that mean in layman's language ?

With the IR remote it really only allows the use on a momentary button. The the remote that is cabled (using the 2.5mm jack that plugs into the left side of the K10D body behind the door) .. it allows the use of half shutter holding the button down ... also the bulb mode with some remotes as well (holding the shutter open for as long as you like and closing it when you want as well).

The K10D can use both ... in your setup menu in the camera though you can select AF on remote button press prior to shutter release ... and this works well in many instances.

I bought one of these brilliant little devices off E-bay a few months ago. It possesses a massive operational range (will even work through solid walls etc) and IMHO is ideal for many potential applications such as discrete wildlife photography amongst others. It's ridiculously good value for the build-quality it offers, although the internal battery in the transmitter is of a slightly unusual variety. However this is not a problem, as the batteries in both transmitter and receiver are easily user-replaceable !
Just my 2-cents worth and hope this info might be of some help ?

Someone else found another idea that works with the K10D....a universal remote!
I tried it with a GE Universal laying around not being used. I programmed the AUX button with code 012 and it works!

Can anyone kindly throw light on the most suitable wireless remote for the K10D? There seem to be a few versions of the Remote F and I am confused. Looking to use it for time photography (bulb) and would of course prefer it to focus prior to releasing the shutter. (Apropos, doesn't Pentax have a camera back for teh K10D to control functions? (Example: Command Back 90 for the Canon T90). Thank you.

The remote F can fit inside the D-BG2 battery grip, but doesn't have wired operation for autofocus / bulb control.

I have a Seculine TWIN1 R3-UT - that is a bit more expensive, but it does both wireless infra-red and wired control (with a button lock-down too). It has a small white LED that flashes when you press the button in IR mode - it also doubles up as a tiny flashlight. It takes one A23 battery. It works with any camera that uses a 3.5mm stereo-jack type control socket.

To the best of my knowledge it will work with your camera. Just be aware that the wireless remote (Remote Control F) only

• allows you to release the shutter, i.e., no AF triggering.
• works from the front of the camera (where the IR sensor is).

It will support "bulb mode" though. I find the wired remote more useful most of the time, the main advantage of the wireless remote being that it is tiny and easy to carry around (even fits into a battery grip).
