DIY Android Phone as Auxiliary DSLR Monitor
Posted By: nanhi, 01-02-2023, 10:42 PM

Most Pentax DSLR do not have swivel monotors. Can we use an Android Smart Phone as an Auxiliary Monitor using a) OTG Cable and an App or b) HDMI Video Capture Card using the HDMI Port on Pentax Cameras and an App. What Free App can be used and what are the Hardware Setups in both the cases.
The smart phone is normally mounted on the Camera using a Hot Shoe adapter allowing the Phone to swivel in the Horizontal or Vertical Plane.

I saw a write-up a couple years ago about doing that.I thought it was on Pentax Forums, but can't seem to locate it via search.

Basically, the person used a small HDMI Video Capture device (cord-based), a hot shoe bracket for the phone, and a cable arrangement. It looked pretty feasible, but I didn't try it at the time.

Searching online, I ran across this. It doesn't include any possibly necessities to accommodate Pentax specifics, but maybe it will be a start?

Absolutely! Use Image Sync (Google Play Store) and mount your phone to the hot shoe with an appropriate phone holder. No wires needed. It requires camera with wifi, of course.

Android Phone as a DSLR auxiliary Monitor

I think JCC Sir is using a Mirror attached with a contraption to the Tripod Socket of the Camera.
NOTE: many of us do not have tiltable LCD Screens so that Ground Level shots or our own photos with the DSLR mounted on a Tripod, or the Camera held high over our head as in a crowd or a Parade cannot be used.
The WiFi method is NOT very good because of latency and signal drops. Also Legacy Pentax DSLRs like the Pentax K-5 IIs does not have WiFi.
Low level shots are possible with a Right Angle Finder, but its use is limited besides they are expensive and difficult to procure.
Any more ideas please except for going for a K-3 or a K-1 - an expensive proposition.

When I used Image Sync with the K-70 I wasn't pleased with the experience, but in fairness I hadn't tried it again in a couple of years...
Until the K3III. It seems more reliable now so I don't know if it is the camera or the app. I saw a comment the other day from someone who noticed the same thing.

That said I also have the right-angle finder; you're right they are not cheap, and I haven't yet had a reason to use it. I suppose I should throw it in the slingbag "in case" along with the hot shoe phone mount I (try to) keep there. Then I can at least figure out which I prefer to use for convenience and reliability if there's a low-level shot I'm struggling with. The app is of course more useful.

.
Yes, this is a piece of polished stainless steel. Home made
I use this to photograph babies. I also have FluCard to my K3, i can connect to my phone, but it's not comfortable. This mirror is more convenient. And fits any body.
