FF lenses for the K-1 that can be bought new
Posted By: Class A, 02-20-2016, 07:36 AM

We all know there is a ton of great FF glass available on the used market that will work great with the K-1.

However, which are the currently available FF lenses (in current catalogues of lens manufacturers) that can be used with the K-1?

Below is a list that started with an initial compilation I did and then attracted a number of later additions by several contributors. There may be still some missing and please post to this thread with information about the lens (but please make sure the lens is in production). I'll then add it to the list.

If you have used any of the listed lenses on the K-1 and find that they do not perform like a proper FF lens, please post to this thread as well. There are some DA (APS-C) lenses included which have been tested as "good for FF" on film cameras but due to differences between film and digital sensors, there may be a few surprises (although I tried to be conservative and only included those that would be true surprises if they failed the "K-1 test".)

Thanks in advance.

P.S.: I realise that there is also another current FF lenses overview but the latter contains discontinued lenses and I think there is value in maintaining a list of lenses that can be bought brand new. Not everyone is prepared to go hunting on the used market. A very nice feature of the aforementioned alternative compilation is that many third-party FF lenses can found organised in roadmap-style charts.

Regarding the suitability of certain DA (APS-C) lenses, I included a few that a truly FF capable based on their design and user reports. There is a far larger number of DA lenses with OK to marginal performance on an FF camera. These have not been included in this list, even though some users may find them acceptable (in particular using the K-1's 1:1 crop mode). A useful resource on the performance of DA lenses on an FF camera is falconeye's "DA lenses on Full Frame: Test shots" thread.

Here's a link for the current Zeiss Classic lenses in ZS screwmount (M42 mount, 45.5mm registration distance).
Disregard the M42 lenses with the shorter (26.8mm) registration distance:

Thanks a lot!

I've added the five lenses with the correct 45.4mm registration distance.

Nice list. It's quite strange how difficult it is to figure out what lenses are available. Would have been nice to indicate auto focus but I realize it's extra work.

That's easy: only the Pentax, Sigma and Tamron lenses are autofocus lenses.

What would need more work is to distinguish between A and non-A lenses.

I don't believe this lens is currently in manufacture.

(and oddly, I own all 5 of the Tamron lenses listed, including this one.)

According to Tamron Europe there are only two 24x36 Tamron lenses available with Pentax K mount, not five:
  • SP AF 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical [IF] Macro and
  • AF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di LD Macro 1:2
The AF 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di LD Aspherical Macro, SP AF 70-200mm f/2.8 Di LD Macro and SP AF 90mm f/2.8 Di Macro are discontinued in any and all mounts and nowhere to be seen.

Sad. The 90mm is a recent one for me, and it seems really nice thus far! The 70-200 f2.8 is a lens I tend to use often if I'm carrying gear around. (I have the mediocrely-reviewed 28-300 in case I want to NOT carry around lots of lenses, but still want some control... although I think some of the review might exaggerate how "bad" it is.... it's not amazing, but it's still a more useful lens than my phone or my point & shoot.)

Thanks for maintaining this list, BTW! It's useful to know about these things. It appears that Sigma and Tamron are pretty much abandoning us Pentaxians nowadays. I wonder if Tamron will go back to it's "adaptall" mounts at some point.
Fortunately, there's a lot of available used glass, as long as you don't mind manual focus!

Yes, even though there are great alternatives to the Tamron 90mm macro, the loss of choice doesn't feel good.
In other words, I don't think there is a lens availability problem for Pentax but that so many third-party options have disappeared over the years (Cosina & Zeiss discontinuing the K-mount and Sigma not releasing most of their Art, Sport, Contemporary lenses go back quite a while now) isn't encouraging.

Let's hope there is an upside in that Ricoh is earning a bit more through Pentax lens sales as if they would with more competition.

Doesn't seem likely to me.
Adapters are not without their problems.

Sigma has an approach that is almost as flexible for a user: They offer a "mount exchange" service. Since they are offering the same lenses in multiple mounts, they offer to swap the mount on a lens copy for another one so that it can be used on a different system. That doesn't allow a user to use the same lens across multiple of their systems but at least changing systems doesn't come with nearly the penalty as it usually does.

Yes, definitely, and even among AF lenses there is quite a bit of choice.
If one includes the used market, then there are even more options.

I entered the lens and left the previous Meyer Optik Görlitz models in grey for now.
Please let me know if there is a better way of representing the current situation.
I could, for instance, remove all the old versions (that are now in grey).
