FF lenses for the K-1 that can be bought new
Posted By: Class A, 02-20-2016, 07:36 AM

We all know there is a ton of great FF glass available on the used market that will work great with the K-1.

However, which are the currently available FF lenses (in current catalogues of lens manufacturers) that can be used with the K-1?

Below is a list that started with an initial compilation I did and then attracted a number of later additions by several contributors. There may be still some missing and please post to this thread with information about the lens (but please make sure the lens is in production). I'll then add it to the list.

If you have used any of the listed lenses on the K-1 and find that they do not perform like a proper FF lens, please post to this thread as well. There are some DA (APS-C) lenses included which have been tested as "good for FF" on film cameras but due to differences between film and digital sensors, there may be a few surprises (although I tried to be conservative and only included those that would be true surprises if they failed the "K-1 test".)

Thanks in advance.

P.S.: I realise that there is also another current FF lenses overview but the latter contains discontinued lenses and I think there is value in maintaining a list of lenses that can be bought brand new. Not everyone is prepared to go hunting on the used market. A very nice feature of the aforementioned alternative compilation is that many third-party FF lenses can found organised in roadmap-style charts.

Regarding the suitability of certain DA (APS-C) lenses, I included a few that a truly FF capable based on their design and user reports. There is a far larger number of DA lenses with OK to marginal performance on an FF camera. These have not been included in this list, even though some users may find them acceptable (in particular using the K-1's 1:1 crop mode). A useful resource on the performance of DA lenses on an FF camera is falconeye's "DA lenses on Full Frame: Test shots" thread.

Thanks, but the Sigma site says it is discontinued.

I have that lens, it is great and I would have loved to add it, but apparently Sigma does not manufacture it anymore.

I do refer to that thread in my first post (see the "P.S.:...").

Thanks a lot for that effort, but I don't think it makes this one redundant.

Initially, when I started to think about this thread, I wasn't aware of the other thread but even once I discovered it I came to the conclusion that this thread still makes sense. The reason is that the other thread mixes currently available and discontinued lenses (without differentiating between them). AFAIC, as soon as one includes discontinued lenses, one may as well include all K-mount FF lenses ever made. If I have to go hunting for a lens on the used market what difference does it make whether it is a relatively modern Sigma 50-150mm or an older FA* 85/1.4?

In short, I think there is value for a list that only includes lenses currently on offer (no exceptions made). I hope you agree.

Source? I should think they're drawing from a reserve of unsold stock here - it's almost impossible to believe there are any new unsold ones left after so long!

(This is one of those things I would be delighted to be wrong about. Fancifully I imagine that somewhere in a factory in Japan, an ancient and long-forgotten lens-maker who began as a fresh-faced youth dashes as frantically as he still can, up and down the assembly line putting together lenses long thought discontinued. Every few months, he packs up a small batch and sends them out to the same back-alley store in the deep heart of Tokyo he's been shipping them to for decades... The pace of work is so slow, the overheads so minimal, the new components ordered in so infrequent, that they are not even blips on the Ricoh expenses sheet. And somewhere else, in another forgotten factory, at an even more glacial pace, a fellow technician who never got the cancellation memo assembles perfectly functional MZ-D's... As Arthur slumbering in Avalon shall one day rescue England, this dedicated pair of company men toils away against the day of Pentax's greatest need... )

Thanks for the info.

I did a quick search and it did not turn up anything.

Do you have a pointer to a shop that sells them?

I can't agree fully, because inevitably you will run into a large grey zone of definitions and theories and viewpoints. I only put lenses on my list in the https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/169-pentax-full-frame/313830-current-pent...w-picture.html thread which I found easily buyable new where I live.

I do not think that "discontinued" makes a lot of sense, since lenses are produced in large batches and they go in and out of production regularly.
I am quite sure the 1.8 primes from Sigma are not in production for PK anymore (=discontinued). But since it's easy enough to buy them new I do include them.
The FA limiteds have been out of production for three years and only recently the production has started again.
We also never know when a lens is actually "discontinued". Most is rumor and hearsay.

The key point is: can somebody purchase a lens new without major issues? As long as I find the lens easily within reach that is good enough. Regardless of it being fresh from the production conveyor belt or from a secret cache of a million lenses in somebodies backyard.

Whatever, it's a grey zone and everybody will see the world differently.

Looks like I'm a source of misinformation today. For a while in the past couple of years, it was available for special order for something like $1400, and was available (I think) though B&H and also from Amazon JP, but when I look now, this ship has sailed.

Are we sure about the 28-300mm Tamron in Pentax mount?
The Canadian distributor doesn't list that lens in anything other than Nikon, Canon and Sony mounts. They have the others though.

You could add the Mikaton Zhongyi lenses. The 85mm f/2, 135mm f/2.8 II and 35mm f/2 seem to be available in K-Mount. The Lensbaby Velvet 56mm f/1.6 is also listed as in-stock on B&H for K-Mount. Not sure if their circular fisheye should really count as a full-frame lens, even though it's described as such. The Venus Optics Laowa 60mm f/2.8 Ultra-Macro is an especially interesting just recently released FF product, also for Pentax-K.

Horus Bennu has a 50mm f1.7 for Pentax K, but it is like M series lenses (no AF, no A)
Zenitar makes some lenses that are still sold in Pentax K (50mm prime, but also some telephoto zooms I think). I think you can get the new Helios 85mm in K mount, as well as that brass Petzval 85mm lens.
Mitakon has some FF lenses for Pentax K, but these are fully manual (basically a preset manual aperture)
Holga has some K lenses, but it is arguable whether they are FF (as some are rather low quality even on APSC, but they are also sold for FF mounts). There are some thread about these. Some are for K mount and some for Q.
Then there are those Samyang and other mirror and telescope super telephotos (with preset aperture and fairly bad IQ)
Lensbaby makes some things, but I think those are a whole system unto themselves.
Venus Laowa has some interesting stuff coming up.
Arsat (Arax?) makes some lenses still in K mount and m42, I think.
Schneider Kreuznach, as well.
And what is that German rebadge company, Görlitz? Its not the same as the good old fashioned Görlitz (someone just bought that old company name to cash in on their reputation), many lenses are just Mitakon rebadges. But still.
There are some pinholes, as well. Skink makes some, but many are "no name" and can be only found on ebay or such sites.

Oh, and Pentax FA 35mm f2, FA 50mm f1.4, and FA 20-35mm were recently (still are?) available as new in Japan. And possibly some FA J zooms as well. Maybe it was old stock and limited to Japan

OK, but what good is it for me if I see a Sigma 50-500mm on your list and cannot buy it anywhere where I live (importing included)?

And I don't think you can still buy a Sigma 70mm f/2.8 EX Macro new where you live, for example.

I agree, but I don't see any "grey zones" when this criterion is applied with the understanding that "available" cannot mean "one brick & mortar shop in the US still has two copies of the lens".

EDIT: My simple, clear-cut, "no grey zone" criterion is whether the lens manufacturer includes the lens in their current catalogue. I don't mean "discontinued" in the sense that some online dealers use it. I mean it in the sense that the lens manufacturer has moved the lens from the current catalogue into the legacy catalogue.

I would only include lenses that are in production.

Add the laowa 15mm, Mitakon 85mm, and Schneider 24, 50, and 85 T/S to your list . Not the most popular choices, but they're available.

Here's a dynamic list of current lenses officially designated as FF:

Full frame lenses

I think you got most of them, but it should be safe to link to that page since it will also include any future lenses.

BTW, I believe the Sigma 24 and 28 primes are discontinued too.

Tamron 28-300 should still be available.

I have that lens, bought brand new 2 years ago. Slow, very light, very compact, very good at wide end, excellent at 200-300m. Sharpest at 300mm. Excellent macro @300mm. I used it a few times for my vacations and i will probably sold it after testing on K-1. Problem is that IQ is below acceptable in the middle range 135mm +/- 35mm.

But come on, we are talking about a global market; there are bound to be huge differences in price, availability. Recently I was on the Canary islands and a store was selling a K110D in box, unopened. We know that's just one store that happens to be.. um, uninformed and still keeps that camera around. But Sigma 70mm is "officially available", even if it cannot be found in most stores. The idea is that one lens is in theory still available as new, while the camera is not available as new according to the official sources, even if some stores carry it. That's how I see it.
For example, you can find Zenitar lenses in K mount, but these are only sold in a couple cities in Russia, if that. Still available as new, from the official factory. How does it matter if it is unavailable in brick and mortar stores in Sweden? In South Africa? In USA?

Edit: I did not know Sigma 70mm macro was now officially discontinued by Sigma. Didn't get that memo

There are a few additional exotic Samyang telephoto lenses.
They are not great, but hey, they can be bought brand new in K mount:
Samyang 500mm MC f/6.3 Mirror (best Samyang mirror lens, decent sharpness but awful bokeh)
Samyang 500mm MC IF f/8 Mirror
Samyang 800mm MC f/8 Mirror
Samyang 500mm MC f/8 Preset (not mirror, a little bit long but very light with decent sharpness)
Samyang 650-1300mm f/8-f/16 (long and light, almost usefull as a monopod)

In addition to that Lensbaby Composer Pro is probably also full frame lens and it is available in K mount.
