FF lenses for the K-1 that can be bought new
Posted By: Class A, 02-20-2016, 07:36 AM

We all know there is a ton of great FF glass available on the used market that will work great with the K-1.

However, which are the currently available FF lenses (in current catalogues of lens manufacturers) that can be used with the K-1?

Below is a list that started with an initial compilation I did and then attracted a number of later additions by several contributors. There may be still some missing and please post to this thread with information about the lens (but please make sure the lens is in production). I'll then add it to the list.

If you have used any of the listed lenses on the K-1 and find that they do not perform like a proper FF lens, please post to this thread as well. There are some DA (APS-C) lenses included which have been tested as "good for FF" on film cameras but due to differences between film and digital sensors, there may be a few surprises (although I tried to be conservative and only included those that would be true surprises if they failed the "K-1 test".)

Thanks in advance.

P.S.: I realise that there is also another current FF lenses overview but the latter contains discontinued lenses and I think there is value in maintaining a list of lenses that can be bought brand new. Not everyone is prepared to go hunting on the used market. A very nice feature of the aforementioned alternative compilation is that many third-party FF lenses can found organised in roadmap-style charts.

Regarding the suitability of certain DA (APS-C) lenses, I included a few that a truly FF capable based on their design and user reports. There is a far larger number of DA lenses with OK to marginal performance on an FF camera. These have not been included in this list, even though some users may find them acceptable (in particular using the K-1's 1:1 crop mode). A useful resource on the performance of DA lenses on an FF camera is falconeye's "DA lenses on Full Frame: Test shots" thread.

Thank you. This lens was already part of the list, though (listed as "24mm F3.5 ED AS UMC TILT/SHIFT").
I knew it was on the list. I saw it there, and thought people reading the article might like to know that there's an excellent bargain on it available at the moment.
I hope that wasn't inappropriate.

No, of course not.

I just thought you were suggesting the inclusion of the lens to the list.

I have both of these lenses. The 28-75 is really nice. I've never noticed vignetting around the edges... the 70-200 on the other hand, has pretty significant vignetting on K-1 (and Z-1p 35mm) It can be adjusted for in Lightroom/Photoshop/Camera Raw, but it would be nice if it didn't need it.

One note on my 70-200.. I bought it back a fair few years now, and I think it might be several revisions old... and it is still a nice lens even with the vignetting.

Thanks for the input. You weren't suggesting that this lens shouldn't be part of the list, though, right?

It is not unusual for FF lenses to show levels of vignetting that one isn't used to when shooting FF lenses on APS-C cameras, for instance.

The Tamron 70-200/2.8 is definitely a bona fide FF lens, it has been sold as an FF lens for other mounts as well.

No, just pointing out that it's possible some people won't be completely happy with it if vignetting scares them off. I shot a production of Oliver Twist a few weeks ago, 726 images in 2 hours, all with that lens. Looks like I'll be handing off around half of those to the director. (I haven't upgraded my K-1 to a Mark II yet, so some of the lower-light areas of the stage just didn't work well. Stupid stage lighting, always uneven.)

One ore: Meyer Optik Görlitz Nocturnus 50 mm f/0.95 DSLR

The optical formula of this lens is different from the one of the mirrorless version (the latter being a rebadged Mitakon Speedmaster): 8 elements in 6 groups for the Nocturnus DSLR, 10 elements in 7 groups for the Mitakon-Nocturnus.

Available in two colours (matte black or silver) and four lens mounts: Canon EF, M42, Nikon F and Pentax K. Estimated delivery date: April 2019.

I'm a bit sceptical about the reality of the f/0.95 aperture with narrow SLR mounts such as M42 and, to a lesser extent, Nikon F and Pentax K. Even Canon, whose EF mount has a much larger throat diameter, limited themselves to 50mm f/1.

Added, thanks!

I think your concerns regarding f/0.95 with respect to mount diameters are justified. Another question is to what extent sensors can "see" such wide apertures. Even f/1.2 or f/1.4 lenses are typically not used to their maximum potential because the rays from the outer areas of the lens are coming in at too steep an angle for the sensels to fully capture them.

Many cameras automatically account for the loss of light caused by this "sensor blindness" by cheating with an internal exposure boost.

You're welcome!

This is really for the sake of exhaustiveness: the price/performance ratio of those Meyer Optik lenses is much too high for them to be of any interest.

I didn't check the pricing, actually.

"Exhaustiveness" is a good cause, though!

Please keep the updates coming.

Curious - would any of the 70-300 4-5.6 zooms stack up to the Tamron 70-200 2.8 optically stopped down? I was thinking to wait for the 70-200 f4 from Pentax, but if there's something good available now, maybe I don't have to

I wouldn't think so but why not check out the Pentaxforums Third-Party Pentax Lens Review Database?
This thread isn't the ideal place to discuss questions like that.
