FF lenses for the K-1 that can be bought new
Posted By: Class A, 02-20-2016, 07:36 AM

We all know there is a ton of great FF glass available on the used market that will work great with the K-1.

However, which are the currently available FF lenses (in current catalogues of lens manufacturers) that can be used with the K-1?

Below is a list that started with an initial compilation I did and then attracted a number of later additions by several contributors. There may be still some missing and please post to this thread with information about the lens (but please make sure the lens is in production). I'll then add it to the list.

If you have used any of the listed lenses on the K-1 and find that they do not perform like a proper FF lens, please post to this thread as well. There are some DA (APS-C) lenses included which have been tested as "good for FF" on film cameras but due to differences between film and digital sensors, there may be a few surprises (although I tried to be conservative and only included those that would be true surprises if they failed the "K-1 test".)

Thanks in advance.

P.S.: I realise that there is also another current FF lenses overview but the latter contains discontinued lenses and I think there is value in maintaining a list of lenses that can be bought brand new. Not everyone is prepared to go hunting on the used market. A very nice feature of the aforementioned alternative compilation is that many third-party FF lenses can found organised in roadmap-style charts.

Regarding the suitability of certain DA (APS-C) lenses, I included a few that a truly FF capable based on their design and user reports. There is a far larger number of DA lenses with OK to marginal performance on an FF camera. These have not been included in this list, even though some users may find them acceptable (in particular using the K-1's 1:1 crop mode). A useful resource on the performance of DA lenses on an FF camera is falconeye's "DA lenses on Full Frame: Test shots" thread.

Don't understand why you want to limit yourself by only looking at lenses currently in production, unless of course, you are planning on making a separate thread for discontinued lenses for full frame format.

If I was going to buy the K1 I would want to know every lens I can buy, or at least the great ones. I just want the best damn lens I can get my hands on for reasonable cost. Since when did Ebay not count as a source for quality glass? I have no problem buying glass second hand.

The 24mm F2.0 is very high on my wish list. It's no longer made, but that's irrelevant. I'm confident I can score one in good condition on Ebay. I had to do so much research to find this one. It's hard to find a good fast prime for K-mount that gives the pop that I want. All the good wide angle primes Pentax offers are F3.2 or F4.0 which is just unacceptable in 2016.

If this is to be a list of every K mount lens that has ever existed, this thread could conceivably be an unfinished work for several years. I think Class A stated his objective quite clearly:

QuoteOriginally posted by Class A Quote
The motivation of this list is twofold: 1)Provide a resource for anyone interested in looking which FF lenses are ( currently) available for the K-1, and 2) dispel the myth that the K-1 is lacking a proper FF lens selection.

Yes, there are.

The only model that I could confirm to be FF is the one I listed, though (Velvet 56). There might be more, but for some of the others I found evidence (in the FAQ) that they are only APS-C lenses.

It looks like the fisheye barely even covers APS-C, lol. However, it seems that the interchangeable optics for the Composer II do cover FF fully, albeit with prominent softness beyond the APS-C area.

There's another thread more to this philosophy, though at this time it only considers Pentax lenses.

One of the hallmarks of PF is that the members spend their own time doing this kind of research and making these threads. Sometimes they become sticky. Sometimes they become Articles. Sometimes they become a Forum or sub-Forum. That kind of idea goes back to the Pentax Discuss List (our member PDL), from which such websites as Boz Dmitrov's K-mount Page, Stan's Pentax Photography, J. Colwell's SPLOS database pricing list (actually, look that up - it's a good starting point for your idea), Die Cast Pro and quite logically PentaxForums originated, as well as dozens I haven't named. These things happened because people decided to do them, Many people here helped create the support infrastructure, the databases, write the articles and support the Forum voluntarily.

IMHO a separate thread listing every single non-Pentax lens, not in production available for purchase anywhere in the world is a great idea.

Yup, exactly. It's just way more prominent beyond the APS-C circle.

I have added three Irix lenses and a number of Samyang lenses.

Any recent additions that I missed (e.g., Photokina announcements)?

Counting lenses with "bit of vignetting" does not qualify in my opinion. DA*55, DA*60-250 and DA560 should not be on the list.
DA560 was presented as DA only and you don't want a 5k$ lens to not be decent at teh frame edge. DA*60-250 may work if you come from ASPC and need glass to go with. DA*55 only works stopped down.
Sold my 55 after getting the K1 and I am not at all interested in the DA560 - but would be in shorte a D-FA version.

The DA 560mm is officially a FF lens. Do you have any proof that it's not decent at the frame edge?

Why not? As long as people know about it, then they can make an informed choice.
I've seen lots of people on this forum who are very happy with the DA* 55mm on FF. Not to mention that most superfast lenses in that range have some degree of vignetting on FF. Nikon, Canon, you name it. Even back in the film days vignetting was a known lens property.
The 60-250mm's optical patent is actually FF, but the physical lens (barrel, rather) has a back baffle that seems to limit some light - there are threads of people removing it. So while it might not be FF-optimized straight out of the box, it would still be a bit unfair to call it an APSC-only lens. To me, and APSC only lens is something like DA 21mm or some of the DA zoom lenses that literally don't shine any light onto the edges of an FF sensor.
DA 560mm is a special lens, and if anyone pays its full price, I expect they did some research and know exactly what kind of performance they are getting. I check multiple reviews of any cheap little lens that I get and they don't come anywhere close to the DA 560mm price range. Even if you add their costs together!

But hey, you are entitled to your opinion and I hope anyone that buys any lens will do their research and get the lens that they want.
