FF lenses for the K-1 that can be bought new
Posted By: Class A, 02-20-2016, 07:36 AM

We all know there is a ton of great FF glass available on the used market that will work great with the K-1.

However, which are the currently available FF lenses (in current catalogues of lens manufacturers) that can be used with the K-1?

Below is a list that started with an initial compilation I did and then attracted a number of later additions by several contributors. There may be still some missing and please post to this thread with information about the lens (but please make sure the lens is in production). I'll then add it to the list.

If you have used any of the listed lenses on the K-1 and find that they do not perform like a proper FF lens, please post to this thread as well. There are some DA (APS-C) lenses included which have been tested as "good for FF" on film cameras but due to differences between film and digital sensors, there may be a few surprises (although I tried to be conservative and only included those that would be true surprises if they failed the "K-1 test".)

Thanks in advance.

P.S.: I realise that there is also another current FF lenses overview but the latter contains discontinued lenses and I think there is value in maintaining a list of lenses that can be bought brand new. Not everyone is prepared to go hunting on the used market. A very nice feature of the aforementioned alternative compilation is that many third-party FF lenses can found organised in roadmap-style charts.

Regarding the suitability of certain DA (APS-C) lenses, I included a few that a truly FF capable based on their design and user reports. There is a far larger number of DA lenses with OK to marginal performance on an FF camera. These have not been included in this list, even though some users may find them acceptable (in particular using the K-1's 1:1 crop mode). A useful resource on the performance of DA lenses on an FF camera is falconeye's "DA lenses on Full Frame: Test shots" thread.

One more: C. P. Goerz Citograph 50mm f/2.8:

The German net SE group is behind this project as they are behind the Meyer-Optik-Görlitz, Emil Busch and Oprema Jena lenses: the "C. P. Goerz" trademark belongs to their subsidiary SEMI Verwaltung GmbH.

is there a verdict ?

Is there a verdict regarding whether the SMC Pentax-DA 40mm F2.8 XS is considered full frame or not

[ remember that the XS stands out as the best in its class ]

I note that one poster said yet but that the Pentax-DA 40mm F2.8 Limited was noted as not being full frame

I thought that those lenses were the same optically with differences in physical size, how made and other differences that aren't relevant

Thanks again. I've seen all variants (including "net SE group") but I think "net SE" makes the most sense.

Sure, I've used it on my K-1, no problems.

Here it is on 35mm film!

Falconeye's "DA lenses on Full Frame: Test shots" thread shows the DA 40/2.8 with a "+", i.e. "usable starting at f/4~f/5.6, with no or a small loss in corner IQ only".

The DA 40/2.8 XS shares the same optical design with the DA 40/2.8 and given its size, it is no wonder that it does not fully convince on an FF camera.

Even though it may deliver acceptable performance for some users (in particular when using the K-1'ds 1:1 crop mode), I did not include any APS-C lens that only provides OK, limited, or even marginal performance on an FF camera.

In part this list is intended to dispel the myth that the K-1 suffers from a limited amount of FF lenses to use on it. If I were to include APS-C lenses that clearly deliver only compromised performance on the K-1, the whole list would be questioned as making up numbers by inappropriately counting APS-C lenses as well.

angerdan and clackers vs. class A

it seems there might be a difference of opinion

but there is only one poster who has expressed an opinion AND who started the thread

" c'est la vie "

I hope all can agree, however, that it is still the best in its class

Thanks, clackers, but I'm still unconvinced.
Many of the film shots are probably stopped down quite a bit.

Note the post by fikkser in which he points out the very bad corner performance of the DA 40/2.8 XS.

I'm more than happy to be convinced that the DA 40/2.8 XS performs well on the K-1.

If someone can provide a test shot at f/2.8 of a test chart that allows evaluation of corner sharpness and vignetting and it shows reasonable performance, I'd be more than happy to include the lens. The bigger the list, the better!

I just want to be careful with respect to adding compromised performers because even only one such lens can be used by someone to discredit the whole list.

"angerdan and clackers vs. class A and fikkser and falconeye" is the actual current list.
Note that falconeye is a Physicist and has performed many valuable measurements for Pentaxians. I'll take his assessment over any user casually stating that they think the lens is fine on FF.

Again, any hard evidence showing that the DA 40/2.8 XS is uncompromised FF material at all apertures and it goes on the list immediately.

@Aslyfox
If you bought an FF lens and it showed bad corner performance like the DA 40/2.8 XS does in the image pointed to by the post by fikkser, would you complain or think that's fair? The seventh image of the sample image post (two children in a playground) also exhibits serious issues in both bottom corners. This is almost a lens baby effect.

1 I don't do math

2 I understood that DA meant no FF then they changed the rules on some DA

3 I ask questions and my knowledge is only as good as my sources

I don't do math

5 I am convinced that all are acting in good faith. Since one started the thread, as far as I am concern, that person has the final vote and tie breaker

That's not how I want this thread to work.

I don't operate from a position of power.

I want to present useful information. Note that there are clearly multiple shots out there that demonstrate very poor corner performance of the DA 40/2.8 XS. I note that you haven't answered my question as to whether you'd be happy with such a lens, if it were sold to you as an "FF" lens. Anyhow, I'm certain there are many who would vehemently complain about the corner performance and I can't blame them.

Given that two independent DA 40/2.8 XS copies (frank's and RiceHigh's) show the same poor corner performance, it seems rather unlikely that this is due to individual samples being defective. However, if someone presents evidence to the contrary then of course the DA 40/2.8 XS should be added.

Summarising, this is not about someone having a "final vote". I will concede that I am stipulating a quality standard that requires uncompromised FF performance. I think that is fair. Some people might be interested in a "DA lenses that sort of work on FF" list, but the focus of the list here is an entirely different one.

Fascinating that *none* of Class A, Fikkser or Falconeye have a DA40 SX.

Whether it ends up on someone's curated list or not will be quite irrelevant to its actual owners.

The claim that the film shots at DA40XS Lens Tested on Film (MZ-S + DA40XS on Kodak Gold 200) - PentaxForums.com must be very stopped down has to be bogus if you look at pics 3,4,5,6,8,9,12, 16,17,18 and especially 20, where only one board of the fence is in focus.

The claim that if something is not FF if the far corners are less sharp or have light fall-off wide open mean that you need to take the FA31 off your list immediately, it's -2eV.

A brick wall test of the related DA 40 Limited wide open is here:

Img 29 MZ-S DA40-2.8@f2.8.jpg photo - Jim King photos at pbase.com

These lenses are really versions of the ancient M40 f2.8, that was designed for 35mm film, and was valued for being a pancake, and it was understood that pancakes compromise performance in many areas - including CA and distortion - compared to much larger lenses. My DA40 SX is so small it's been mistaken by other shooters as a lens cap. If I find it's on my K-1, I shrug my shoulders and take the shot:

I don't know about the 40mm XS, but the DA 40 definitely has soft corners and a fair amount of vignetting at f2.8. It seems to get better by f4, but I wouldn't call it fully full frame compatible. The soft corners are a bigger deal than the vignetting to me.
