FF lenses for the K-1 that can be bought new
Posted By: Class A, 02-20-2016, 07:36 AM

We all know there is a ton of great FF glass available on the used market that will work great with the K-1.

However, which are the currently available FF lenses (in current catalogues of lens manufacturers) that can be used with the K-1?

Below is a list that started with an initial compilation I did and then attracted a number of later additions by several contributors. There may be still some missing and please post to this thread with information about the lens (but please make sure the lens is in production). I'll then add it to the list.

If you have used any of the listed lenses on the K-1 and find that they do not perform like a proper FF lens, please post to this thread as well. There are some DA (APS-C) lenses included which have been tested as "good for FF" on film cameras but due to differences between film and digital sensors, there may be a few surprises (although I tried to be conservative and only included those that would be true surprises if they failed the "K-1 test".)

Thanks in advance.

P.S.: I realise that there is also another current FF lenses overview but the latter contains discontinued lenses and I think there is value in maintaining a list of lenses that can be bought brand new. Not everyone is prepared to go hunting on the used market. A very nice feature of the aforementioned alternative compilation is that many third-party FF lenses can found organised in roadmap-style charts.

Regarding the suitability of certain DA (APS-C) lenses, I included a few that a truly FF capable based on their design and user reports. There is a far larger number of DA lenses with OK to marginal performance on an FF camera. These have not been included in this list, even though some users may find them acceptable (in particular using the K-1's 1:1 crop mode). A useful resource on the performance of DA lenses on an FF camera is falconeye's "DA lenses on Full Frame: Test shots" thread.

Thanks!

Thanks again. I've seen all variants (including "net SE group") but I think "net SE" makes the most sense.
You're welcome. I would say it's "net SE" if you're making a reference to the company itself and "the net SE group" if you're making a reference to the whole group.

My DA40 SX is so small it's been mistaken by other shooters as a lens cap. If I find it's on my K-1, I shrug my shoulders and take the shot:
IMHO, always best to proceed if you don't have time to change out equipment

if I try, I might be successful, if I don't I know I won't have a chance in in getting a photo

personally speaking I didn't buy the DA 40mm 2.8 XS to use on a full frame camera

( which is good because I don't own a FF camera and don't intend on investing in one )

Fascinating that *none* of Class A, Fikkser or Falconeye have a DA40 SX.
Well, falconeye must have had one as he took test shots on film with it.

It doesn't matter, anyhow, as one does not need to own the lens. All one needs are eyes and pictures taken with the lens (doesn't matter who took the pictures).

The claim that if something is not FF if the far corners are less sharp or have light fall-off wide open mean that you need to take the FA31 off your list immediately, it's -2eV.
No claim has been made that a lens must not be less sharp in the far corners.
Every lens, without exception, is weaker in the corners.

We are talking about acceptable and normal (for FF lenses) levels of decreased sharpness.

Light fall off has not been a subject at all, in this discussion. BTW, many FF lenses have significant light fall off towards the corners. This is a) not a criterion for deciding in favour of APS-C vs FF lens type when facing normal FF lens fall off levels, and b) easy to fix (unlike a severe decrease in sharpness, as exposed by the DA 40/2.8).

So no, the FA 31/1.8 is not in danger of loosing its FF lens status.

A brick wall test of the related DA 40 Limited wide open is here:
Thanks, but I see the same issues confirmed (as far as the low resolution image allows).

That may or may not be so. The point is that the DA 40/2.8 has been labelled a "DA", i.e., as an APS-C lens, and performs fine as such. A lens, whether APS-C designated or not, can be considered to be useful on FF when it maintains its APS-C performance on FF. Anything else would violate reasonable expectations.

However, when one uses the DA 40/2.8 on FF, it loses its otherwise fine performance standard. We could accept the DA 40/2.8 as a "toy" lens into the FF category, but it is not sold as a "toy" lens or any other speciality lens (lens baby, soft-focus, etc.).

Once Ricoh starts selling the DA 40/2.8 as a "toy"/"fun" lens to be used on FF, we can accept it as such, with a respective designation. To accept the lens as is, by making excuses that its predecessor was never meant to be a stellar lens, is not a convincing approach, AFAIC.

K-1 + DA 40mm XS owner here, I would absolutely consider it FF compatible especially in a 'real world' world sense where a 10% crop might actually happen anyway for framing purposes, or the user adding vignetting as part of PP. I've seen non compatible ASP-C lenses on my K-1, they are darn right obvious, the DA 50mm 1.8 and DA 40mm XS are exceptions so it seems.

I take nice pics, I'm not a 'pro pro' photographer, but if yer slapping glass on the camera and it looks fine and you really can't tell a difference between the edges of a 40mm XS and a FA 50mm then either yer a bad photographer (likely lol) or it's just so close to call, hardly worth mentioning and becomes 'nit picking'.

I find Class A's view probably does more harm than good, in reality many of us with K-1's take nice pictures with it on (in FF mode), ergo it's FF compatible. Other sites consider it FF compatible, and they show acceptable images uncropped to support this. It comes down to 'acceptable image' and in this regard I would be +1 for DA 40mm XS being FF compatible.

What exactly is the harm?

Is it a problem that the list only features roughly 100 lenses and not roughly 101?
I don't think that the addition of a single lens (or even a couple more, if you consider the DA70/2.4, etc.) would make a difference to the argument that there is a very reasonable amount of FF lenses for the K-1 to choose from.

The "good" is, however, that I avoid the harm that could result in admitting just one lens that only offers compromised performance on the K-1. The backlash by critics of the K-1/K-mount no doubt will be: "No wonder they can claim that there are ~100 lenses for the K-1, if they include APS-C lenses which do not really cut the mustard on close inspection. Perhaps Pentaxians don't hold much regard for quality?".

I agree that someone who doesn't mind the shortcomings of the DA 40/2.8 XS may be better served if the list contained it, but the list is about "FF lenses", not about "APS-C lenses that still somewhat work on FF". Anyone is welcome to maintain a list of "APS-C lenses that kinda work on FF". I personally wouldn't want to mislead anyone into believing that the DA 40/2.8 and some other APS-C lenses, are perfectly good to use on FF. Arguments like "one often crops away the corners anyhow" are not acceptable. If anyone bought a copy of FA 31/1.8 which shows as weak corner performance as the DA 40/2.8 XS, they would return the lens and not "shrug their shoulders", "crop the corners", or point to samples where the deficits cannot be seen or do not occur as much due to stopping down.

DA 50mm 1.8 is on the list, DA 40mm XS is in the same league. There are multiple sites outside of PF that claim the XS is FF compatible (in FF mode), we have multiple users of K-1's with XS's that also say the same. I don't see corners or edges compromised more than any other FF lens I own.
Anyway, all good, at the end of the day it's healthy to have differences of opinions. I just see this thread as a list of lenses that work completely fine and acceptable in FF mode on a K-1, rather than what was manufactured and intended for.
At the end of the day anyone researching and stumbling across this thread will see the difference in opinions and make their own minds up, personally I think the DA 40mm XS should make this list but it's your thread. No worries.

The Samyang f3.5 24mm Tilt/Shift lens can be had for £500 sterling plus £8.00 shipping in UK/Ireland, and probably a bit of Europe, from a seller on Amazon called DSLR GEAR UK.
I believe the same vendor is also selling it on eBay at a very slightly different price. (I think slightly more, but with free shipping to some places.)

It generally goes for quite a it more on amazon.co.uk. There are other sellers with higher prices.
