DA lenses on Full Frame: Test Shots thread
Posted By: falconeye, 07-07-2008, 02:50 PM

Hi everybody,

I would like to open up a thread dedicated to one topic:

DA lens on Full Frame: a sticky test shots thread.

This thread shall be dedicated to test shots of a DA lens mounted to a full frame body (e.g., a film camera body). By test shot, I mean shots dedicated to evaluate the performance. Shots of ordinary subjects aren't suitable to this task, normally, and should not be posted. So, these are the rules:
  • K mount lens dedicated to the APS-C form factor is used.
  • Image is taken full frame 36mm x 24mm.
  • Lens hood was removed.
  • And ideally, no filter is mounted.
  • The aperture used is specified (note that film cameras don't record EXIF...).
  • Sample image shows the entire field of view.
  • Sample image(s) show(s) corner, border and center performance at 10MP-100% (multiple crops, or single not-resized image).
  • The subject is such that resolution and vignetting at the borders can be compared to the center.
The idea behind this thread is obvious: To compile enough data to assess the spectrum of available lenses for a forthcoming full frame DSLR in K mount.

#################################################

Table of results as obtained in this thread (updated regularly):
SMC Pentax-DA primes...
SMC Pentax-DA zooms...
Sigma K mount DC...
  • Sigma 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 DC: -
  • Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 DC: - (below 14mm, Gooshin)
  • ...
Tamron K mount Di-II...
  • ...
Overall rating scale:
+++: no significant difference between APS-C and FF corners
++: difference but usable at full aperture with a small loss in corner IQ only
+: usable staring at f/4~f/5.6, with no or a small loss in corner IQ only
o: usable at f/11 or with big loss in corner IQ only
-: not usable

Please honour the thread creator's wish to be this thread a collection of facts and first hand experiences (test shots of DA lenses on FF). And facts only.

Thank you so much.

Bad news here about the 60-250mm
It is times like this that make me happy I went with the Sigma 100-300mm f/4 APO EX DG, I have a copy of it in Canon EF mount and I use it frequently on the 1Ds MK III for still life work. It has minimal vignetting on the 1DsMKIII, the 300mm end of it loses contrast at f/4 though on the full frame camera @ f/5.6 things recover. On the Pentax K5IIs the 100-300mm f/4 really gets to stretch its legs, the Sigma lens offers very consistent performance at f/5.6 - you can get away with using f/4, though focus speed is superb the AF accuracy of the lens has been a thorn in my side since it isn't parfocal, so calibrating the focus for a lens with this focal range is very difficult. I haven't had such a hard time with the focus on the 1DsMKIII, but if the Pentax FX format camera has a pixel density that matches - or exceeds the D800E I suspect AF accuracy will still be problematic with this lens.

It is off-topic here but for the record, I don't think the two lenses can be compared (reasons would have to go in another thread).

I'm pretty sure I read some threads with comparisons between theese to lenses. Falk, can you please write something about the reasons they cant be compared in an appropriate thread and make a link to it in this. I'm very curious.

Did anyone ever notive that a full frame digital camera should not be compared with a full frame film camera when looking... Leica had quite seom trouble getting their full frame analog lenses to co-operate with a full frame digital sensor. All full frame cameras need to correct for lens vignetting due to the sensor pits. So keep testing but start from scratch as soon as a full frame digital camera with K mount appers.

That's why they have micro lenses. Leica has the same problem as for example NEX with the corners due to the their short flange distance making the micro lenses having to cope with a too steep angle. The K-mount is way easier to work with in this regard.

I agree with lessmore49. I'd hope to continue to use APS-C for long focal length lenses to keep weight, bulk and cost down, and use the new FF camera(s) for mid-range like 28mm - 105mm (where I shoot the most). For short range I'm perfectly content with my K-5 IIs + DA 12-24mm, but of course FF could offer a wider field of view given the right lenses - would be tempting for landscape.

Your comment and I quote .." of course FF could offer a wider field of view given the right lenses - would be tempting for landscape"....intrigues me. I've checked some of the photo examples with the Pentax 12-24 on a full frame film (35mm) Pentax and although from 12mm to before 18mm setting has vignetting....from 18mm to 24mm I couldn't see any vignetting and the photo's looked fine to me.

I know 18mm -24mm on a full frame would be something like (guessing) possibly equivalent to ASP-C of 12 mm to18mm or thereabouts. So wouldn't using the 18mm setting on a Pentax 12-24 on a full frame give the equivalent of around 12mm on a FF ....without vignetting ?

I'm not an optical engineer....but wonder if I'm right ?

Right, 18mm on FF has same FoV as 12 mm on APS-C. It would be cool if the 12-24mm lens is (largely) FF capable!

I'm hoping it and many of my other Pentax digital lenses are. From what I can see...checking out photo's of these lenses (12-24, 10-17, 55-300, etc. ) taken on a 35mm full frame...in this forum....it appears that this maybe the case, unless I've misinterpreted things.

Don't know where you get that impression. To me, looking at the photos in this and other threads, none of the zooms appear FF-compatible. Even if you considered the 12-24 FF-compatible at 18mm (and the IQ isn't too good in the corners according to http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2800/4082121196_21116a441c_o.jpg and http://www10.pic-upload.de/08.02.13/ukmtj19q6i16.jpg), using it only at that focal length kind of defeats the purpose of having a zoom.

If you can tidy up / format / beautify your post a bit, I'll be glad to copy it over to the OP.

However, I am hesitating to include links to dslr-forum. I can read them, but users w/o an account there (the majority of users here, I guess), wouldn't be able to see images, making the links pointless.

Wrt to 12-24 and similiar lenses on FF: Such wide zooms are highly optimized for the image circle and usually don't make much sense for a wider image circle. E.g., look at the stunning Nikon 14-24/2.8 (FF) to get an idea how much more complex and expensive this gets in order to cover FF. But 14mm/2.8 would require a 9mm/1.8 lens for APS-C for equal results, so the complexity is for a reason.

OTOH, a dedicated FF lens equivalent to the DA 12-24/4 (like the brand-new Nikon 18-35/3.5-4.5G) is more light-weight than the DA 12-24, faster (as of being faster than F/5.6), cheaper and, according to first reports, has at least the same stunning image quality (or better at the F/4 equivalent full aperture of F/5.6).

Wrt general discussion within this thread: I'd like this thread to stay clean and be dedicated to results and test shots regarding K mount APS-C lenses when used full frame. No exchange of opinions, please (I know, I broke my own rule with the above 2 paragraphs myself ). I am sure however, there are other threads within this forum serving this better.

Done. The raw thread markup, for easier copying: It would be nice if the summary on the first page linked to one or more of the s - Pastebin.com
If you still think it's not tidy enough, you could link to my post above, at least. The evaluations on the first post are not very useful without sources, IMO.
Regarding the DSLR-forum posts, I can read it and see the images (even the large res ones), altough I don't have an account there, so I don't think that's an issue.
