Guide to Pentax K series lens hoods
Posted By: gofour3, 06-06-2013, 04:53 PM

After increasing my K series lens collection over the past couple years, I found information relating to the original lens hoods greatly lacking. Even top notch sites like "Bojidar Dimitrov’s Pentax K-Mount Page" are confusing with their lens hood terms.

Even though there are a couple of exceptions, you can generalize that K series lens hoods are plastic clip-on and come in two filter thread sizes, 52mm & 58mm. The terms PH-S58 did not exist back then and lens hoods were marked with the filter thread size on the back and the lenses the hood was designed for on the front. Rubber, mental and screw mount hoods were generally not used for the K series lens hoods. The clip-on lens hoods for wide angle and standard lenses came with a hard case, the clip-on telephoto hoods were designed to fit in the hard lens case with the lens.

The following is a list of all K series lenses and indicates if they have a clip-on or built in hood. I have made up my own name for each hood and have attached pictures of the front and back if possible.

I'm looking for the rectangular hood PH-S58. I know it is very hard to find, but could someone give me the dimensions of this hood. Perhaps there are alternatives that will fit on my new SMC Pentax K 20/4.
The hood for the Super-Multi-Coated TAKUMAR 1:4.5/20 is also 58mm, so it should fit.

Thanks for your reply and indeed, I found a Takumar 1:4.5 20mm hood with the original adapter at an online store in London for 10£. However the back of the adapter has a female thread of +/- 60mm! So this is unusable. The hood itself is OK, so I bought a new step-up ring 58-77mm and it fits perfectly without vignetting. Problem resolved!

The 18-55 mm kit Lens has at least 2 variations of Hood One is the Pentax PH-RBA
which fits
schneider Kreuznach D xenon 1:35-5.6 18-55 al 52mm
and
SMC Pentax 1:3.5-5.6 18-55mm AL

There is also the PH-RBC 52mm this fits the
Pentax DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL WR

It doesn't fit the first 2 lenses as I found out this morning when I got a package from EBay ... Maybe I should treat myself to the WR Lens

Wasn't a 30mm hood with the corresponding markings (1:2.8 30mm) made?

There may have been one marked with just the one lens, as the K30/2.8 was available until after the A Series had come out and the other K Series lenses using that hood had been discontinued. Never the lest it's the exact same hood.

Same applies to the Ultra wide 58mm hood. I have some with different lenses marked on the hood, as the K18/3.5 was released later on.

That’s an M series lens so none of these will fit. That lens has 49mm filter threads. These are 52mm and 58mm.

The proper hood is PH-S49 Square Clip-On or PH-R49 Round Clip-On. The square can often be found with a leatherette case.

Phil, for the round hoods would it be hard to put their height (or depth depending on how you look at things)?
The reason I'm asking is that I'm looking for a hood for a K135/3.5 (the Round 52mm – Telephoto) and I happen to have a hood from a Takumar 135/3.5 so I was wondering if they are roughly the same dimensions. And there may be other situations where Takumar hoods could work.

I have the Tak 135/3.5 hood and the K135/3.5 hood sitting next to each other on my desk and yes they are roughly the same height if you ignore the screw-in part of the Tak hood. The K135/3.5 hood is 50mm high if measured sitting on a hard surface.

The problem with most of the Takumar hoods is they have smaller filter threads than the K Series lens, so you would have to use a step-down ring and then get vignetting.

The ones that would work on a K Series lens are the Tak 20/4.5 and Tak 24/3.5 hoods. They would be fine on the K18/3.5, K20/4 & K24/3.5. The OEM 58mm hood for those K Series ultra-wides, is hard to find and expensive.

That would explain why the hood sort of screws on, but doesn't fit quite right. It still seems like it might work well, so I'll probably give it a workout at some point. Although I'd hate to do anything to my K135, as I really enjoy using that lens.

Yep most of the middle focal range Takumars had 49mm filter threads and the K Series 52mm, so none of the hoods are interchangeable.
