M42 Contact Ring

Having just received my first Takumar (Super Takumar 35mm f3.5) to mount on my K100DS, I've been playing with setting +1.5 EV, or using foil to short the contacts on the camera mount. This afternoon I had an idea for an "M42 Contact Ring" made from a piece of 12-gauge copper wire (a piece of scrap house wiring). Shown here are pictures. I straightened the wire, carefully bent it so that it tightly hugs the 35mm Tak along the shoulder just above the mount surface, then carefully placed a hook bend in the tip of the wire, and a "Z" bend about 3cm back from that end. You can see the bends in the pictures. This ensures that the wire will press down on the contacts between the lens shoulder and the body flange. I trimmed the length of the wire so that the hooked end just catches on the K-mount pin on the camera body, and the other end stops about 1cm from the Man/Auto switch. Possibly a piece of 10-gauge wire would fit properly, yet not require the bends I made to make sure it presses on the contacts. I don't have any 10-gauge to try.

The resulting ring snaps nicely in place, then when I screw on the lens it catches on the K-mount pin just at the right time and stays snugly in place. Works great! I've got an S-M-C 50mm f1.4 on the way, so if necessary I'll make a similar ring for it. It only took a few minutes, and may not even be worth that effort, but I'm a tinkerer, and had fun with it.

The last picture is a quick snap of some budding tulips in my back yard using the Super Takumar 35mm f3.5 lens mounted on the K100DS with the M42 contact ring in place (0.0 EV compensation), ISO800. Unfortunately, it was heavy overcast with the approaching cold front (and forecast 20-degree F low), so these little beauties will be frozen brown blobs in the next couple of days.

Joe, May I offer you a Nobel Prize? That's brilliant.

meanwhile, I took these two on the day I bought my AUTO Takumar 55/1.8, at the same show I bought a FED-3 with an Industar-61.

A rather toxic look... and there was an awesome set of storm clouds... this would be at the Meadowlands, NJ, reputed home of Jimmy Hoffa...

Nesster, did you have the ISO cranked on those shots? Clouds look strange, so curiosity has the best of me.

Nesster, please just put the Nobel award check in the mail - I'll be looking for it!

Definitely a "toxic" or "industrial wasteland" look to those pictures. Hoffa - hmmm - wait, I think I see a hand sticking out of that trash pile in the last picture - could that be Jimmy? Impressive resolving power in that Takumar!

That is fun bokeh on the 32 f2.3 heliphoto, I'm a big fan of my f2 version, but would love to try the 2.3.

Here's one from today with the 35mm f2, haven't been out in the last 2 weeks but finally had an afternoon out.

It may be heretical to say so, but other than the times when I need the extra brightness, I think the 35/3.5 is better than the 35/2.

ISO would have been the ASA400 of the film I was using

The weather was extremely strange, with those super dark clouds, but then sun peeking around the corners.

Pasipasi - one of the things I miss most about Finland is the beer. About all I've found around NJ is Koff porter. Oh, and a Swedish light beer (once) that had the magic taste.

Beautiful spring day. 6" of snow, so the birds couldn't get any food. Who the heck gets 6" of snow in April? Takumar 200mm. Not a great shot. Taken in snow storm through a dirty window.
