Thanks for the link. It leads to a downloadable version for my Palm PDA, among others. I tried it and it is completely customisable to suit whatever circle of confusion you wish to select. This means you can dial in a more critical setting for work which is going to be printed large, like landscapes, for example.

Posted before or not (tho it has been) it's one of the better calculators out there imo as the focal length and aperture stop selections are quite extensive; I'll bookmark it one of these days... until then posts like this serve as a reminder for me

. (sure free form entry would be better instead of the selections, but if you look into the tables in the javascript you'll understand why pull-downs were used for the aperture at least)

The only thing that bugs me is that it lists every possible focal length up to 76mm, and then blows right past 77mm, gong by 5's from 80mm on up. Not that the dof is appreciably different at 77mm vs. the calculated 76mm, but still. No love for the FA77...

I do wonder though why this isn't a 'camera function'. :-)

I'm probably just being silly, but a K20d costs (without complaint from me) more than my last two laptops combined.

I just don't see why there isn't a function to at least get the hyperfocal number displayed on that pretty LCD. And as to 'actual' sharpness range / DOF, I don't know if the camera can determine 'range' from the focus, on a 'modern' lenses it certainly has the f-stop and focal length.

Even an option to input the distance to subject (similar to entering focal length on a manual lens) and getting the DOF would be absolutly amazing.

It's not the top of my Pentax wishlist mind you... but it would be very helpful for some of us. :-)

Someone once suggested to me (and I think it's a great idea) to take a picture of useful stuff like this and keep it, ie protect from deletion, on your SD card. You can just call it up when you need it and zoom in to read it.

You can also lazer print charts for 90mm, 50mm, 105mm, 180mm etc and keep it in the bag.
