On a side note ... it was mentioned that .PEFs can't be views in Photoshop CS3 ... this is incorrect. As I can view mine in CS3 (after I downloaded the correct ACR for it.)

I am another fan of Fastone Image Viewer as well ... and it is on my Notebook as well. Love it, works a charm.
From the K7 or Kx?

I have Photoshop CS3 and a K200D. How can I get PS to open the PEF files?

Currently I use Faststone viewer to convert them.

I'll have a look at Adobe's site ... I am pretty sure the K200D was included in the last ACR version that was available for CS3.

I have done conversions with Fastone ... and it's nothing like what CS3 can do ... trust me.

ADobe Camera Raw version 4.6 add the K-m to the listing ... so I'd say the K20D and K200D were already available from 4.3.1 by the looks of it. You can download it from this page:

Adobe - Adobe Camera Raw and DNG Converter : For Windows : Adobe DNG Converter and Camera Raw 4.6 update

Make sure you have the ACR that supports the K200d and then just simply open your PEF files. Depending on how you browse and your operating system and platform, you may have to tell your browser to open PEF files with CS3.

I can confirm that the above download works fine for my K200D PEF files.

One has to work out the right place to drop the contents of the zipfile into It goes under Plugins / File Formats.

See the very many existing threads comapring these here and in the post processing forum, but badsically, no - they contain the same image data, it's more a matter of which format your particular pp software happens to support better. Most decent programs support both equally.

The biggest thing used to be file size. Pentax cameras used to shoot an uncompressed DNG file that was huge, while the PEF files were smaller. I think that has changed with the kx and K7 and that now the DNG files are compressed as well, but I could be wrong, since I don't use that format.

Anyway, as Marc says, there should be no difference between the two.
