Depends. Not all lenses need or support such metering.

DA lenses for example can meter wide open. So stopping them down is only needed for optical DOF preview.

M lenses are metered by stopping down.

M42 lenses are metered while stopped down, but you have to stop-down them manually, by turning aperture ring.

Stop down metering and DOF preview can be done by AE-L and green buttons. But their functionality must be set up, for them to function accordingly (permit aperture ring, set shutter speed with AE-L in manual mode, DOF preview: optical).

I am not sure what you are trying to ask actually. If you mean if this camera can do stop down metering with older lenses like pre-A series, then yes it can, but must be set in the custom menu. If you mean your daughter was a newbie and didn't know what she's doing, then get her a book on the basic of photography.

Metering

I have the k100d and am okay doing stop down metering with the ae-l button not sure how to explain it for her K.X being mine operates different. I don't have the camera with me to play with the controls and she's missing somthing in the manual she is not new to photography for I taught her on my manual camera.

If she's shootingManual mode, on the KX, she can use the EV button to lock in the shutter speed. She doesn't have to use the green button, and can assign that for something else.
