What is that green thing?

This afternoon I was out taking a few snaps of the porch restoration underway at my house. Several of the photos have a green reflection-like thing in them. Fortunately I didn't want to use any of the affected photos. But, I'm wondering what this green thing is.

I guess I was shooting partly into the sun, and I forgot to extend the hood on my DA35. Would using the hood have prevented this? And what is this thing called? (I normally use the hood, just forgot today.)

TIA!

Looks like lens flare, and the hood should go a long ways towards preventing it.

I've never in my life seen something like that.

That's something mechanically wrong, especially since you said it happened on more than one shot.

A flare issue wouldn't give you such a well-defined and sharp green oval like that.

Lens flare and motion blur.

Just kidding...it's actually just a lens flare or reflection. Are you using a filter? If so, then that's the likely culprit. You'll want a hood for you lens when shooting when it's sunny!

I'd say either lens flare, or if you were using a filter then it could be a reflection caused by the filter.

And, as others have mentioned, the lens hood should help prevent this from happening.

Nope, no filter. I normally use a hood, just forgot this afternoon.

Thanks everyone!

Ira, the "green thing" was on several shots, but nowhere near all of them.

Maybe it's the Jolly Green Giant's thumb print?

Actually here's another photo without the green thing. The light was a bit different though.
