Is there a place to buy a white K-X as body only ? or even refurbished ? I only saw kits.

I found a new white K-X with 18-55 kit lens for $485 (US) shipped

But I could really dig a refurbished K-X "body only" for $300 shipped My money is low ... and I could use the lenses from my Pentax film cameras at first...

The kit lens usually adds about $50-$75 to the price of a camera, so if the kit is $485, no way would I be expecting to see a body only for less than $400. if the lenses you have are film lenses, then none are wide angle on a DSLR. So get the 18-55 - it's *by far* the cheapest way to get a decent wide angle option.

The K-x actually costs more without the 18-55 than with it. Buy the kit and sell the lens to KEH for $47. The cheapest I've seen it refurbished is $450.

Maybe not where you live, but any of the color combinations can be ordered in kit in Japan

Yes, it does seem silly but browse and price shop for a while with some of the larger online retailers and you will see these packaged bundles very often at prices below or about the same as the camera body alone. Who knows why but I suspect there are overstocks of kit lenses as many of the Kx buyers are current owners who are adding a second body or upgrading.

The 18-55mm kit zoom is actually a very good lens and at its wide end gives very little away in terms of max aperture.

There have in effect been two reviews of the lens in its Mk 1 and Mk II guises by Popular Photography -

review of the Samsung clone 18-55 Zoom -
PopPhoto.com seems to have dropped their very useful SQF (Subjective Quality Factor) charts from these web versions -
scans from the magazine -

and the more current 18-55 AL II version -
- from their review of the Pentax DA 18-55 AL II -

The current Mk II is a slight improvement over the original which was already well praised -
so the 18-55mm Mk II kit zoom is somewhat of a bargain.
