I just invested (yes, invested, they are too expensive for what they are) in 2 original pentax lens hoods, a 52 and a 58mm. Both of these have a little hatch in them. I can't figure out what that could be for. Anybody knows?

Yes. Remove the tab, and you can get a finger in there to rotate a polarizer. Just don't lose the tab!

it's for the point and shoot feel, you can still get your finger in the way of the lens if you want =)

It's so that you can adjust filters that you rotate to get the right lighting; i.e. circular polarizers or variable ND filters.

You are absolutely right with the invest comment, I wonder if we should name them as items on our insurance same as we do for the bodies and lenses.

But they're worth every penny! I think it's a little sad with all those new Pentax owners shooting with their K-x'es without lens hoods - you really lose a lot of IQ by not using one.

That's definitely a dumb thing to do. People who buy DSLRs to be point and shoots tend to ignore the hoods. That's a reason to glue them on there at the factory, though, not omit them.

Agreed what surprises me is the number of people you see not using the supplied hood, mostly I guess because they think it is only there for bright sun.

what I find hard to understand is the thinking at Pentax to not supply them, even if it is a kit lens, the cost to Pentax must be pennies to make.
Maybe they think KX owners don't worry about the finer points of IQ??
I just picked up a 55-300 dal for peanuts at a store that some one did not want.
sharp right to the edges from 55 through to 300 at F8.
no hood of course and the plastic mount worries me a bit out of 8 lenses its the only one with no metal mount but the IQ is impressive , better than a couple of 3rd party zoom I have.

problem is I can't find a bayonet fit cheap one for the 55-300 only for the 18-55; plenty of screw thread ones, but not realy what I want due to stowage in the bag.

1) I picked up a metal Super Tak 135/150 hood in great condition for a $1.99 BIN last week. Other sellers now have it for $20, and without the slot to work the filters.

2) I need one for my 85 Tak, and there's a Bin for $70.

3) I just bought a Super-Multi-Coated 200 F4 for $70, with hood.

Lesson:

You gotta have patience with eBay. It's a JUNGLE out there.

nikon metal hoods ($6) works very well if you have odd 52mm filter threads for a wide variety of focal lengths.

did you mean the Nikon hood fits the 55-300DAL? if so by the bayonet fitting or is it a screw into the filter threads one?
