I should have said "at any aperture that both are capable of." Also I may have (mis)read that the OP was saying he found greater dof with the f2, perhaps because it was discussed in the context of greater sharpness. Most likely the f2 at 2 stops down would have more sharpness than the zoom wide open, but honestly I have come to believe that there is as much sample variation in these things as there are design limitations. So it's possible that the DA-L might have been a clunker, and the f2 a particularly outstanding sample.

It's my understanding that these are pretty nice for cheapness:

Quantaray AF LDO 100-300mm f4.5-6.7 For Pentax Digital! - eBay (item 370394020834 end time Jun-12-10 12:42:23 PDT)

I think you could probably do a fair bit better on the price than in this listing, or get something else like a Pentax lens for the same money, but they are sleepers and appear once in a while quite cheaply. Since they're slow-but-little they've been of interest to me as a budgetey person who doesn't do serious tele work but sometimes likes to toss something in the car, chase any cute animals that wander through my yard, or otherwise cover bases. The filter size happens to be convenient to me, too

Some of the fellers here recommended them, if you spot a bargain.

I guess, i messed up pretty badly. But I really don't regret it. I still have my DA L 50-300 zoom lens. I'm also saving up for the Tamron 17-70mm.

I assume you mean either the Tamron 17-50 or Sigma 17-70. If/when you get one of those, then you won't miss the 18-55.

There was something seriously wrong with that DA-L if you are getting visibly better images from a 50/2. There is no difference between the two lenses in DOF at 50mm at any given lens opening.

Paul
Except for the "openings" that the DA-L doesn't support

(such as f/2, f/2.8, f/4....)

It is a very convenient size, extending like a superzoom. There's a nearly identical Sigma model too, which won't surprise many people. I sort of hate this lens because I got one in a bad eBay transaction, so I never gave it a fair test.

I tested some other 300mm options here, though not the more recommended Pentax 100-300:

I'm close to winning a Sigma 100-300mm Pentax K 1:4-6.7 on eBay for $60 after shipping.
I'll test it out. If it doesn't work out well, I can always send it back.

The FA-J 75-300 sells for about that at KEH. It is an under-rated lens and (having owned both) I prefer it to the Tamron mentioned earlier. Here a a couple of samples taken with the FA-J:

I vote for this one too..very under-rated!
I've gotten some very great portrait shots of my daughter using this particular lens.
