Aspect ratio - printing original size photos

I am a very novice photographer and I'm hoping this is something that is easily corrected. I'm using a Pentax K20D and iPhoto. When I request images to be printed the photos is automatically cropped and the sides get cut off. I have been told that this is because of the aspect ratio and the fact that traditional size prints don't match the aspect ratio. As a result the original composition is ruined. Any thoughts of how to correct this?

If the dimensions of a picture are 2:3, there is simply no way to print it 8x10" without cropping, any more than you can put a square peg into a round hole without shaving off part of the peg. You need to select a print size that's also 2:3, like 4x6" or 8x12".

Since this is a common beginner question, I'm moving it to the beginner's forum.

what size are you printing?

if it is snapshot sized they should print 100% of the frame, but larger printing media is different.

YOu have traditional print sizes like 8 x 10, and also you have sizes driven by standard printing papers, such as 8 1/2 x 11 etc.

but if you are dealing in small prints they are typically 4 x 6 or 3.5 x 5 which both print virtually the full frame.

Print full-frame on the paper and use a matte frame to crop it - it's done all the time. Or, get used to looking at white borders (like black frames on the TV).
