Thanks everyone for all the advice and suggestions.

It does appear that it was simply the focusing screen I was seeing and my diopiter had shifted to where it looked awful.

However, in resetting it I began to wonder just where it should be set to? Is there a technique to this?

It's covered toward the very beginning of the manual. Basically, you are trying to get the viewfinder *info* display (the etched lines, the digital readouts at the bottom) as sharp as you can. The "0" value is something like two or three clicks from the right on most cameras, I believe.

View Finder Fuzzy

Some one in this Forum mentioned a loose Focusing Screen door as a probable cause of fuzziness in the view finder.
Do take out the lens and check. All you do is push the door up to lock it securely.
The diopter adjuster is a big culprit too.
