Both of the images posted from both cameras look about normal for 100% crops from kit lenses. The Nikon doesn't look any sharper to me, but as noted, it's also not being blown up as large, so you're giving it an unfair advantage. The second Pentax image is slightly misfocused or blurred from shake, but the first shows the kit lens performing abut as should be expected.

I'd say that's as good as anyone could expect from the kit lens. If you want sharper then stop down even more to f8 or f11. Otherwise buy a better lens, after all, there's a reason there are all these other lens available at price points above the kit lens.

K-7 Kit lens focus

You may already being do so, but just in case...are you using the lens hood with your kit lens? Its been my experience that using the hood improves both colors and contrast. Sub par constrast can make what would otherwise be an acceptabley sharp picture look less so.

Thanks for the feedback everyone - I feel somewhat reassured, but also chastened realising how much more I need to get my head around. I'm sure you'll be hearing from me again soon!

I am unconvinced you do not have an AF issue, the second image is very, very soft.

No EXIF to say for sure, but according to the filename, the second image was focused *manually*. The first image was AF.
