Trouble takeing pictures in the dark with K-x?

I was trying to take pictures at night last week I was at my friends house in the driveway. It was not pitch black the porch lights were on, as well as some on the garage. MY friends wanted me to take a picture of them. My k-x would not take a picture the flash just kept charging. Is it because I had it on Auto focus? Anything I can adjust? I don't want this to occur when I go on vacation.

Probably because you were using auto focus, and it couldn't get a lock. Best would be to manually focus, and you should be good to go. Just not sure if you will get focus confirmation, so it may be a bit of trial and error.

when you say the flash is "charging" was it flashing rapidly and letting out a buzzing noise right? That means it's trying to find focus when it lights up because there needs to be a certain amount of light to autofocus, the flash aids in this if there isn't enough ambient light
