Thanks for all the fantastic responses.

Does purple fringing go away with "apo" lenses or is it a function of how wide open the lens is?

Purple fringing can occur with any lens in high contrast conditions. It can be mitigated by stopping the lens down. It can also be dealt with in post-processing.

Correcting this amount does have a couple side effects but it can be done.
