Which flash to buy?

Hi, I have a K10 and the built in flash does not do it for me any more. I am considering the Pentax 360 and can get it for about $169. I have also come across the Sigma530dgst and the Bower SFD 926 p. The Bower is considerably less expensive with a high GN number, but I dont know enough about Bower. Can you help me in my quest for a good flash and a reasonable price?

Thanks

Gerry

I'm also looking at flash guns and as a mature student money is pretty tight.
One of the few that look any good for under 200(sterling) in terms of feature is Metz48 AF1 (170) but have had trouble finding reviews....
Know you're accross the pond, so not sure how prices work out there but hope it helps.

I've been looking at that one also. I found it on Amazon (Amazon.com: Metz 48 AF-1 Shoe Mount Flash for for Pentax & Samsung TTL Digital Cameras - Deluxe…)

While it doesn't have all of the bells and whistles of the 58 (their top flash), it does have a lot going for it:
  1. Wireless TTL triggering (so, slave only)
  2. Built in USB port
  3. Built in diffuser
  4. swivel head
  5. up/down capability on head
  6. and tons of other options.

Not bad for $245. I looked at the bowers, vivitars, etc and they had some nice options there also. I am thinking this one because it will work solidly on it's own, but leaves room for upgrades in the future if I ever decide to go there.

I have also come across the Metz. It has some good reviews and is very powerful. I have seen prices around $200 or so on line. It seems like an upgrade from the Pentax 360

I've had the Rokinon Digital D980AFZ-PK since June, and am very pleased with it. I believe this is the exact same unit as several other flashes with different brand names (Vivitar, Digital Concepts, etc) and goes for about $120 on eBay.

It has motorized zoom, tilt/swivel, LCD display, and a relatively high guide number. At the time I bought it I found reviews of it on several forums and it seemed to be relatively well-regarded, for a lower-priced flash.

I'm quite happy with it, as I've already said

ETA: here's a link to the Digital Concepts version which appears to be identical to mine, other than branding:

I have the Bower and absolutely love it, it's powerful and controllable, and is really cool how it interacts with the camera. it's pretty easy to just pick up and use or set all the settings yourself

and it's cheap!

wholehearted recommendation

The Bower appears to be (again) the same flash as the ones I mentioned above. They probably all come from the same factory with different labeling...

I strongly believe (but am unable to absolutely prove) that the the source is Hong Kong OEM Icorp. Their own name for the product line is Tumax. See:

TUMAX

I've got a Todo item to update my guide to better reflect this, but, time is a precious resource.

I have it narrowed down to the pentax 360 or the metz 48af1. It's a tough one. The pentax seems more compact and the metz more powerful. They are around the same price. What would a pentaxian do?

Did you check the price for the Sigma 530 DG Super lately? Its $204 now with free shipping (us) on Amazon. Looks very tempting to me. It is doing a job that close to what the Pentax 540 can do with a price equal or less than the Pentax 360

Cheers ~
