Flash this way

Im just getting use to some of the features on my K10D and I came across an extremely cheap flash made by Vivitar that I was told would work with my camera. Now the only problem is that I do not know the first, second or third thing about how to use them. I put batteries in the flash then mounted it to my camera now Im stuck on the what's next. Please help.
The specifics behind the flash is as followed:

Vivitar 840AFP auto focus zoom flash

Thanks in advance for any light you can shed for my flash problems.

The flash will work, but has to be used in full manual mode.

Camera on X mode, or a shutter speed of 180 or slower.
