I am going to keep the K-x. ...
Sounds like a sensible decision to me.

I can't begin to tell you the difference in quality and manual control between the $300 home video cam we started with, to the pro-sumer $2000 Canon GL2 he borrowed from a friend and used for awhile, to the $4000 Canon XH-A1 professional camera he uses now. Yes, it's HD, but it's more than that.
If everything is shooting same spec, say 720p, then codecs matter but main differences are a) bit rate b) the lens. And SLRs have the best lenses for the money, way better than prosumer video cameras. You'd have to spend 10x as much for similar film optics. And many still shooters already have the kit, so it comes free with the territory.

The bit rate of the K-7 is actually very good, even "excellent" I hear.

Sure, if you're just interested in taking quick videos on vacation - you want to capture your six year old's first ride on Dumbo at Disney...
If you are a photojournalist who wants to take back some video footage with your stills (shot silent so you don't need to run sound) a DSLR is perfect. This is a growth sector.

If you are a film student and cannot afford much, it's pretty easy to invest in a shoulder harness, rails, focus puller etc. and turn a humble SLR into the equivalent of a full video rig. You can learn the correct techniques and develop some chops.

If you are an indy / art / documentary film maker you may find all you need in an SLR setup, at a low price. Control over depth of field helps get that "film look" that many videocams cannot match.
