Buying a body+glass kit or a 50mm & a tele?

Hi all,

I'm not kin of a kit lenses , and I thought a good idea would be buy the body and a 50mm and a telephoto lens (Sigma 70-300)

Do you think its a better buy? Do I really need the kit over the 50mm as a walk around lens?

Thank you, Sblast

If you don't come from zoom experience, then you may not need a kit zoom. But 50mm on APS-C is longer than "normal" -- like 75mm on a 35mm camera.

You could try the new 35mm f2.4, though; that is much like a normal. Or a 28 if you are willing to buy used or Sigma.

Do you know the focal length range you will shoot the most ? If not then how do you find out ? Btw, what's wrong with the kit lens(es) ?

You already got some feedback. Everyone is different and your needs are likely to differ from others.

If the kit lenses do not fit your needs, save the money. I did not buy the kit lens with my K-7 and selected directly the lenses that I needed: the DA18-250mm and a Voigtlander Nokton 58mm f1.4. That is, an all-rounder zoom and a fast prime. I am very happy with my choice that fullfill my needs. If I would buy again a camera and lens, again I would get exactly the same lenses.

Ultimately, consider your needs and buy what you need! Do not bother by "peer-pressure"...

I had single focal length lenses (SMCT 28, 35, 50, 135, 200mm), went to zooms, and wouldn't even consider going back. However, I can see the use of a fast 28/35/50 for certain kinds of pictures.

The kit 18-55, if that's what you mean, is an excellent value. I don't see buying a new high-end (apo) Sigma vs. the 55-300, given what people seem to say about both. If money was a consideration, you could probably find a used 70-300.

Not having 18mm at least on the wide end would be very disappointing to me, but everybody is different. Even with 35mm, I had to have my 17mm (for my spotmatic), and now can't live without 10mm for pentax digitals.

Either you already have enough experience to know for sure that you would be in the very small minority of people who would be happy having only telephoto lenses (eg, the 50 and a 70-300), or else you are almost without doubt in the very large majority who will do most of their shooting at focal lengths *under* 50mm. Meaning, get the kit lens, or something else normal and/or wide angle (eg, 17-70, 16-45, 35, etc).
