M series lens on a ZX-50

Could anybody enlighten me as to why I am not "supposed" to be able to use an M series lens on a ZX-50? The Pentax Camera Lens Compatibility Chart says that the ZX shouldn't even fire with my Pentax M 50mm 1:1.4 lens on it. I just found this out and I don't think anybody ever told my camera either. I just now took a couple shots which I'll post back here after I get them developed. If the camera did, in fact, take the pictures.

So you're saying the camera did indeed take photos with that lens? It's not supposed to be able to. Are you sure it wasn't an A lens?

If it did take photos, then it's likely because the contacts on the mount where short-circuited, and your photos will all be exposed incorrectly.

I know that an M or any non automatic aperture lens will get you the blinking F--- on the ZX-60 and shutter will not release but a fully manual lens will work on the ZX-50. If I am remembering correctly. I always thought that was a fantastic advantage the older Zx-50 had over the ZX-60.
I don't think with electronic cameras that have to have film in the camera to test it yourself. Put the M lens on the Zx-50, set it to M mode and see if the shutter releases. I know it won't for the ZX-60.
I always had the impression that the ZX-50 had more in common with the ist D in that it could use any PK mount lens and has preset exposure modes as well.
I loved my ZX-50. It was my main camera until the K10 came along.

You're right, and we've updated the chart accordingly: The Pentax Camera Lens Compatibility Chart

This might be a big news for me ! I have a mz-30 and always stay away from M lens becuz i was told to do so. After i read the updated chart, seems like Zx-30 is same as Zx-50 would accept M lens as well(?) Please tell me if i m reading this right

I am too scared to dig out the camera from the closet to do such a danger expriement ! :P

I would say that any of the ZX (MZ) auto focus cameras that came before the ZX-60 will accept manual lenses. But a quick test can usually be simply attach a lens and turn on the camera set in M mode. If you get a blinking F-- in the display, the shutter will not actuate.
Once I got a Zx-50 and then also a ZX-60 I admit I rarely used manual lenses from my K1000. Being able to use manual lenses with the ZX-50 and not on the ZX-60 could be useful to many.

Another seldom known fact is that all the MZ/ZX line sports an interchangeable focus screen...

To the OP : this means you can fetch yourself a nice MZ-M split-screen to compliment your M lens! Advice : prepare to be blown away by the fat big FF screen...

Ask your Pentax service for spare MZ-m focus screens. I got 5 (!) for 3€ each, they were lying by the handful in an abandoned tray at Pentax France...

(I already can see MZ-m prices soaring up on ebay!)

We've updated the chart once again: The Pentax Camera Lens Compatibility Chart

The MZ-50 DOES support M and K lenses with restrictions in metering, while the MZ-30 and MZ-60 do not.
