What do you mean the camera does not recognize the lens?

Not sure what that means, but: are you sure the aperture ring of the lens is at A position?

sorry I am new to this and over my head I think but the meter only works when I put it in auto aperture.
if I manual move it the camera does not list the f stop and meter stops working all together

Set aperture ring of the lens at A position. That's correct.

Then if you want to manually control the aperture of the lens and the shutter speed, use the camera body.

It's possible to use the lens with the aperture ring NOT at A position. But let's not go there for now.
