Question on Rokinon 500mm mirror lens

I have been toying with the idea of purchasing the 5.6 Rokinon 500mm mirror lens. Does anyone have any feedback on this lens? I have a 55-300 Pentax DA that I love and use with my K10D, but would like a little more reach at times and this lens is inexpensive for what it does. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I've had a few 500mm (f8) mirror lenses and in my opinion, the only one worth owning was the Tamron SP BBAR 500mm f8. None of them were the Rokinon however. Mirror lenses give a special donut bokeh that seems to offend a lot of people. Never did me but I'm a strange individual at times . The focus throw on those lenses, especially if they have close focus, is about 30 turns (or so it seemed). Using Filters with them is an interesting prospect as well because the screw into they rear of the lens. Being fixed aperture lenses, ND filters are required to change exposure if you want to stay set at a given shutter speed. Whatever you buy, make sure it comes with. Some of these are sold with 2x multipliers that are pretty useless (IMO). If you are after compact, fine but if you're looking for lightweight reach on the cheap, one of the 600-1000 telescope types might be better suited for you.

Here is a moon shot done with my Vivitar, hand held.

I bought & compared a Rokinon 500:6.3 to a DA 55-300 at 300mm & enlarged to 500mm effective.

The Rokinon's image quality was comparable to the 55-300 at 300mm & subsequently enlarged to the same image size.

Here's a shot of a Siemen's Star Resolution chart:

Plus I had great difficulty hand-holding it.

I don't use my Rokinon as a result of these tests.

Also be aware that mirror lenses will produce donut shaped bokeh. Some people like it and others do not. I for one think it's ok for some shots but definitely not all. Do a search of donut bokeh and you will see examples.

it looks like the mirror lens had better resolution because you can see the grain in the paper.

biggest issue in the comparison is the exposure is different, that throws everything else off.
