Shooting macros, particularly one to one macros is really tough. Start a little bigger with things that don't move too much (like flowers) and work down to smaller things. If you are really interested in macros, you may want to invest in an external flash, or even a ring flash. These will help increase the amount of light getting to your subject (which is typically blocked by your lens).

Good technique often requires the use of tripods. The problem is really that your plane of focus tends to move in and out and when you are at macro distances it is tiny. Using live view won't help, unless you are on a tripod.

Manual focus is typically better than auto focus with macros, because the camera doesn't really know which part of the object you are shooting you want to focus on. Typically on bugs, for instance, you want the eyes in focus, but the camera may easily choose the wings or body as points of greater contrast.

Typically shoot Av mode and use a smallish aperture (like f11). This will maximize your depth of field. Of course, if you don't have enough light, you may need to shoot more wide open than that.

Have fun!
