Well, it's not that cheap. its a da 18-55 (11) and it sells anywhere from$90-$189 on Amazon market place. What do you think a good up grade would be? I have an 55-300DA and a 50 1.4 prime; all Pentax
Check the marketplace here. You can replace it for cheap.

Nice explanation jeffJS. Someone should put that in a thread and sticky it.
There probably is something already that explains it somewhere. I've probably even done a couple others. I don't ask for my stuff to be made sticky anymore, Did a rather extensive writeup on cleaning sensors (or the beginnings of an article) and Adam said there were too many stickies already.

It would probably cost more to fix than replace. At this point, I would be attempting to repair it myself. Nothing further to lose in that prospect.

I wouldn't even bother to try to fix it, but I wouldn't throw it away, replace it.. but in the meantime disassemble the broken one to use for macro shots, f.ex. use the front element clipped on your 50mm as a high IQ "close-up" filter.
use the other lens elements to fiddle with flash, making a flash extension tube..
lots of DIY prospects from a broken lens like this one..

Don't throw away that lens. I'll bet the metal lens mount could be used to repair a broken 18-55mm DAL lens mount.
