That vivitar 28mm is pretty good, I would not bother buying another pentax 28mm. Save that money for a good zoom .

@paperbag846:
The Vivitar I have is an A21 as identified in the Great Vivitar Bestiary.
Vivitar 28mm 1:2.8 MC Wide Angle
It is better than my 18-55mm at 28mm, but I've been a bit spoiled by the quality I have gotten from shots using the Pentax SMC-M 50mm 1:1.7, the SMC PENTAX F 1:3.5-4.5 35-70mm, and the 55-300mm kit lens.
So, yes, I think you are right. I'll use the Vivitar for now and save for that Pentax DA 16-45mm or something like it. That way, I figure I end up with:
  • Zooms: 16-45mm > 35-70 > 55-300 to cover the range (I see that the Pentax DAs 17-70 or 16-50 or 18-135 or 18-250 are well-regarded too. Maybe someday, and then I would only need 2 lens to carry around...)
  • Primes: 28 and 50 for lowlight, indoor, portrait sort of work
  • True Macro: I have the F 35-70 and the Vivitar 80-200, and I do have the close-up lens that can be attached too

Another 18-55 replacement worth considering might be the Tamron 17-50 1:2.8, pretty fast and sharp for a good price. Some people have had FF/BF problems (warranty takes care of this when bought new though), also it seems there is a slight tendency for underexposure towards smaller apertures. The constant aperture at 2.8 is very nice combined with the way the k-x does high ISO for indoor use. Optically this is based on the Tamron 28-75 1:2.8 which would give a bit more reach at the expense of the wide end.
