Hi litboat, welcome to the forum! Like photolady said above, make sure you are on center focus. I'm an old geezer too, and I found I get better results if I forego live view completely and rely only on the viewfinder. It works better for me. If you want to (re) learn manual focusing I can suggest a series of exercises that will really help. They are pretty boring but they get the job done. They were written up by a gentleman named Godfrey over at DPR. He was (and still may be, I don't visit there much anymore) a prolific poster there and a good photographer.
