meter operating timer K7

what does changing the meter operating timer do and why would you want to change it?

If you want to continuously meter while in M mode, for instance, you'd want to increase this setting. I always leave it at the minimum value, however, to conserve power.

I keep it as long as possible (30s) because I may take a while to take the shot after the camera has metered. I usually wait for all sorts of things to get in and out of my frame to get the composition I want.

Sorry I'm not clear. Surely in manual mode there is no metering? I use Manual mode mostly, I set the shutter and aperture myself, or I hit the green button to get an auto exposure to use as a starting point. Being in manual mode by defintion implies nothing is being metered., doesnt it?

That is correct, however the secondary function is that the viewfinder display remains active for the timeframe you have set...hence 30 seconds being useful in manual mode as the display remains active for a longer period.

Actually, there is metering in Manual mode. It obviously cannot affect exposure since you are in full control. It is used to show you how far off you are from the metered value, on the K-7 you can see it on the lower right corner of your viewfinder.
