how to change fstop? help please!

i have my pentax kx set to manual mode and the user guide said to change the fstop by pressing the AV button once, then turning the e-dial,
but when i do this the only thing that changes is the shutterspeed. What am i doing wrong?

I don't own the K-x but is there a setting in the menu that suggests what you want the rear thumb wheel to be tasked to in manual mode?
For instance do you have rear wheel set to shutter in M mode and you would rather it be set to aperture?
Just giving suggestions.

You should be able to toggle between aperture and shutter speed with the Av button. Either the aperture or shutter should be highlighted, use the dial to adjust the highlighted item. Then assign the green button to "Tv Shift" or ""Av Shift" for "Action in M Mode." For example, if you have the green button set to "Tv Shift" it will adjust the shutter speed when pressed, after you've dialed in your aperture.

Hope that wasn't as clear as mud. It's all in the manual.

Try holding the av button while you do it.

Ahh. See now it is my turn to have failed to read the post fully. If the poster is using a lens with a manual aperture, then the body cannot control the aperture. You see why it is important for us to know if it is a coupled lens? As in one that has automatic aperture features.
But still... Should probably not default to changing shutter speed. Should it?

Tell us what lens you are working with.

What Kent said rephrased,

IF (K-X) AND (lens set to A) AND (Manual mode) THEN
Av button toggles between e-wheel Aperture and Speed adjust
END IF

There are many ways to skin a cat with modern cameras. Beyond M, you can shoot in AV or even P and still adjust the exposure paramaters.

Yes. Shooting with a manually operated aperture lens in any Program mode will still give you a suggestion of shutter speed but the lens will always have the aperture wide open. Unless, of course you clip off the aperture lever. Then in any Program mode you can manually operate the aperture and the shutter is selected for you.
But I am sure that is not what Britlen had in mind either.

Kent and Adam, thanks but i actually tried those things before i posted and it was still a no go, it's like it's stuck on shutterspeed, it will not even highlight the fstop when i try any of the suggestions .

But, Thanks anyway! really appreciate y'all taking the time to try helping!

Ira and Matt, I'm using the Pentax DA L 18-55mm and DA L 50-200mm,
the lens manual says the aperture settings are controlled automatically

Hi Britlen: Just a suggestion, but check that the mode dial is firmly in M. Sometimes if it's a little off either way weird things can happen. I know this from experience. Try turning the mode dial off M and then back to it to make sure it isn't slightly off.
BTW do the lenses work as designed in AV mode?

On my k-x in M mode:
rear dial only controls shutter speed
+/- (AV) button plus rear dial controls aperture

If it is not working like that try resetting the menus to the default by going to menu, the wrench, 3, right arrow

Be careful interpreting what people say. Lens type and status of its A setting must be specified along with Av button results.

Lens set on A, Kx camera, M mode, then Av button toggles between f-stop and speed. I have verified this.

Dave

PS if lens not set on A then e-wheel cannot set aperture I think.
